Concussion Legislation • Overview of the Challenge: • Estimated 1,500 to 2,500 youth athletes visit Colorado emergency rooms for sports-related concussions each year. • Number of children treated in the Concussion Program at Children's Hospital Colorado has risen at an average rate of 32 percent per year. • Opportunity: • To create awareness for one of the most comprehensive concussion bills in the country. There are a total of 31 concussion bills that have been passed, but Colorado’s includes a wider range of ages and specifics, in order to protect more children. Children’s Colorado experts advised that the Colorado bill be expanded to include the 11-14 year old range in addition to the 14-18 year old range and add middle schools (public and private) as well as club sports and public recreation centers.  • Goals: • Take the lead role in drafting the concussion legislation (which turned into SB-40) • Position Children’s Hospital Colorado as the go-to source for concussion-related information and treatment • Educate and inform the community on concussion safety & prevention and concussion signs/symptoms

  4. Media Relations Children’s Colorado was featured in numerous top-tier local and national media outlets in relation to the Jake Snakenberg Youth Concussion Act. In addition to local coverage, an Associated Press article swept the country with over 350 placements in outlets including The New York Times, National Public Radio, MSNBC and Sports Illustrated’s SI.com.

  5. Passage of SB-40 Teresa and Gabbie McWilliams at Feb. 2011 press conference announcing support of SB-40. Gabbie sustained a concussion and is a Children’s Colorado patient. Dr. Mike Kirkwood, pediatric neuropsychologist, testifying in front of Senate Health Policy committee in support of SB-40. Success!! SB-40 signed into law in March 2011. Many Children’s Colorado patients and partners are behind Gov. Hickenlooper during the bill signing. Gov. John Hickenlooper with Allie (Children’s Colorado concussion patient) and Deb Paul. Allie and Deb provided testimony to the Senate and House Health Policy committees.
