WHAT IS SEARCH AND RESCUE? • Search and Rescue is defined as • “Search and rescue (SAR) is the search for and provision of aid to people who are in distress or imminent danger.” • This means it up to us to get them out!!!!
TYPES OF SEARCH’S • Primary • Rapid, usually conducted in conjunction with fire attack operations. Move fast, look, listen and feel. • Secondary • Slow methodical search typically done after the fire has been adequately knocked down.
Primary Search • When conducting primary search remember the following: • Make mental blueprint of structure as you go. • Remember you are in a burning structure so be aware of fire and heat conditions you may or may not have any water between you and the fire. • Remember to always protect your means of egress. • NEVER LEAVE YOUR PARTNER. 2 IS ONE 1 IS NONE. • RESCUER SAFETY IS PARAMOUNT. DON’T PUT YOUR LIFE AT RISK TO SAVE ANOTHER!
LOCATION LOCATION LOCATION • Typical Locations to search when conducting a primary search are : • Behind all doors. • Closets • Behind and on couches and loveseats • Under and in Beds • Bathrooms – Bathtubs • All Bedrooms (especially at night)
Secondary Search • Secondary Search is being conducted after initial knockdown so be very thorough. Take your time and search all areas of the structure. • CAUTION • Keep in mind that the structural stability of the home has been compromised. Be constantly aware of signs of structural collapse. • The decay stage of the fire is usually when secondary searches are conducted. The poisonous gasses will be just as bad if not worse during this time. IT IS STRONGLY ADVISED TO USE AN SCBA AND FULL PPE.
SEARCH PATTERNS • RIGHT HAND • Start at the entrance door and STAY right. • LEFT HAND • Start at the entrance door and STAY left.
Right hand pattern Notice their position. Lead man hand high on wall, second mans tool and leg sweeping the floor.
SUMMARY • Regardless of pattern, remember that the techniques demonstrated are very basic. • Communication between “lead man” and “second man” is CRITICAL. • Stay in contact with wall and or hose. IT IS YOUR LIFELINE. • Remember the location of windows. If an emergency arises you can use them as an alternate means of egress • Control your breathing. • Use your tools to help locate objects and potential victims. Work together as a TEAM.
