Investigating the impact of competitiveness on anxiety directionality using modified CSAI-2 and SOQ measures in intramural athletes. Findings suggest high competitiveness relates to facilitative anxiety. Constructivism methodology is highlighted for exploratory studies. Results show no group differences based on competitiveness levels. Contradictory to prior intercollegiate athlete studies.

Purpose & Hypothesis • Find a way to delve further into the directionality of anxiety measures. • None due to exploratory nature of study.
Method • 69 Intramural athletes • CSAI-2 modified to include directionality of -3 to +3. • Sport Orientation Questionnaire • Only used the competitiveness subscale. • Note: an exploratory study is tough to do in a positivist framework. Constructivism is a better methodology to utilize when a basic understanding is what you desire.
Results • No differences between groups (median split of competitiveness). • High competitiveness: anxiety viewed as facilitative. • Low competitiveness: SC lower & less facilitative. • All groups had a + mean direction score.
Discussion • Contradictory results to their earlier study that used intercollegiate athletes. • Does that matter? • Overall positive means for both CA & SA. • Does that make sense?
