  1. Prairies (Temperate Grassland) By: Mariam Al Thani, Hessa Al Kubaisi, and Muneera Al-Jaidah

  2. What Are Prairies? • Temperate grasslands are composed of a rich mix of grasses and forbs and underlain by some of the world's most fertile soils. http://www.radford.edu/~swoodwar/CLASSES/GEOG235/biomes/tempgrass/tempgras.html

  4. What Prairies Look Like…….

  5. More Information….. • Grasslands are divided into two main divisions: • Tropical Grasslands, called Savannas • Temperate Grasslands.

  6. Animals That Live In Our Biome (Temperate Grasslands) • Gazelles • Zebras • Rhinoceros • Wild horses http://www.buzzle.com/articles/grassland biome-animals-and-plants.html

  7. More Animals….. • Lions • Wolves • Prairie dogs • Jack rabbits

  8. How The Animals Adapt To The Temperate Grasslands • They burrow to hide from predators because grassland is an open area that is very dangerous. Many are called grazing animals because they have adapted to eating grass. Without trees, there are few places for animals to hide from predators

  9. Plants That Live In Temperate Grasslands • Buffalo grass • Ryegrass, foxtail • Wild oats

  10. More plants…. • Common Sagebrush • Savanna Blazing Star • Purple needle grass. • Wild Indigo

  11. Temperature •Temperate grasslands have warm, humid summers with an average temperature of 18° C •Cool, dry winters with have an average temperature of 10° C. •Most of the rain falls as convection rain in the summer. •Sometimes frost and snow may occur in the winter.

  12. Human Activities That Affect Our Biome • Livestock farming such as dairy farming and cattle ranching are possible because there are sufficient and suitable grasses for herbivores. • Wheat farming is carried out in the temperate grasslands of South America because the warm temperate continental climate is suitable for growing wheat.

  13. Good Or Bad?! • I think they are bad affects on the grasslands, because even though they are popular for growing wheat or farming dairy, the farmers should grow/farm some where else, because they might kill some animals or crush some plants while doing their work.

  14. Thank you
