Unit 7 : Classification
Classification is the process of sorting things into groups based on their similarities. At home, we classify items like kitchen utensils, books, or clothing to keep our spaces organized. In biology, classification makes it easier to study living things, including animals and plants. Historical figures like Aristotle and Carolus Linnaeus developed foundational classification systems, where organisms are grouped based on observable features and shared traits. Linnaeus introduced the system of binomial nomenclature, assigning each species a unique two-part name for clarity in scientific communication.

WHAT IS CLASSIFICATION? SORTING THINGS INTO GROUPS BASED ON THEIR SIMILARITIES
Why would you want to classify organisms ?? Makes it easier to Understand and study living things
CLASSIFY LIVING THINGS ANIMALS PLANTS Fur No Fur Leaves All year Lose Leaves
Taxonomy - the scientific study of how things are classified.
Aristotle • Developed the 1st classification system • Animals grouped based on movement – those that could fly, swim & those that walk, crawl or run • Then divided those into subgroups based off of similarities
Aristotle • Still use his idea of classification & subgroups today but we do not group based off of movement
Carolus Linnaeus Used observations as the basis of his classification system Places organisms in groups based on their observable features
Carolus Linnaeus Developed BIONOMIAL NOMENCLATURE, which we still use today. Canis lupus
Bionomial Nomenclature All organisms are given an unique 2 part name (called scientific name) based on shared traits. Canis lupus
