The course • LM 1010 – Information Literacy • Gen Ed required course • Mostly freshman enrolled • Large numbers of students • Class delivered online
The students • SUU students1: • Had a high school GPA of 3.5 • Had an ACT score of 22.5 • Come from • And are 55.8% female. Southern 15 counties 3,829 49.5% Northern 14 counties 2,335 30.1% Out of State Resident 668 8.6% Non-Resident 918 11.8% 1 Taken from the Factbook for 2011-2012 (http://www.suu.edu/general/ir/fact11/)
The first research project: Do rural students fair worse in an online course? • Compared only students who received A’s or F’s • Looked at external factors • Examined 521 students from Fall of 2007
Conclusions from the first research project • No significant difference between resource poor and resource rich • ACT score statistically significant • Accounts for 20% of the model of A’s & F’s • Model does not predict failure well
The second research project: What in course behaviors identify good students? • 385 students who accepted their test out exam grade • 398 students who completed the class • Fall 2010 (is this right? Seems too low)
Students who tested out - 385 • Variables compared to Test Out score • Pre-test • Number of sessions • Session time • Total time • Mail sent • Mail read
Full term students - 398 • Variables compared to Total Points • Pre-test • Number of sessions • Session time • Total time • Mail sent • Mail read
