John 10:10 The thief’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life. • AMPLIFIED – have and enjoy life, in abundance, to the full, till if overflows • (Philippians 3:12) "Not that I have already obtained it, or have already become perfect, but I press on in order that I may lay hold of that for which also I was laid hold of by Christ Jesus."
Rich and Satisfied • Spiritual well-being • Emotional well-being • Physical well-being • Social well-being • Financial well-being • Life purpose fulfillment
Romans 3:21-22 • Made right with God by placing our faith in Jesus Christ • True for everyone who believes • Romans 5:1-2, 17 • Peace with God because of what Jesus has done for us • Brought us to a place of undeserved privilege
Possessing Emotional Well-Being Possessing the Promised Land
I. Wholeness • 1 Thessalonians 5:23 • May God make you holy in every way • Spirit – man is a spiritual being able to interact with the spiritual realm • Soul – man has a mind, will, and emotions able to interact intellectually and emotionally • Body – man lives in a body, able to interact with the physical realm
Spirit of Man – made new at salvation • John 3:3 – the Holy Spirit gives birth to spiritual life • 2 Corinthians 5:17 – anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person • Soul of Man – process of renewal • James 1:21 – accept the Word God as planted in your hearts, it has the power to save your souls • 1 Peter 1:22 – purified your souls in obeying the truth
Body of man – promise of complete renewal • 2 Corinthians 4:16 – the outward man is decaying • 1 Corinthians 15:54 – the perishable puts on the imperishable, the mortal puts on immortality, death is swallowed up in victory
The Well-being of mankind – a part of the covenant established through Jesus’ crucifixion • (Isaiah 53:5) "But He was pierced through for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; The chastening for our well-being fell upon Him, And by His scourging we are healed.” (KJV – “…the chastisement of our peace was upon him…”) • Spirit – pierced for our iniquities • Soul – chastened for our peace • Body – scourged for our healing
II. The Restored Soul • The soul – mind, will, emotions – needs to be restored because of wounding
Both positive and negative • Some negative – anger, fear, anxiety, grief, sorrow, depression • Negative are not bad, but are calling us to an appropriate response – respond to the truth • Inappropriate response becomes destructive to us and others around us
(Ephesians 4:26-27 NASB) "BE ANGRY, AND yet DO NOT SIN; do not let the sun go down on your anger, 27 and do not give the devil an opportunity.“ • (Ephesians 4:26 - 27 NLT) 26And “don’t sin by letting anger control you.” Don’t let the sun go down while you are still angry, 27for anger gives a foothold to the devil.
(Hebrews 12:15 NASB) "See to it that no one comes short of the grace of God; that no root of bitterness springing up causes trouble, and by it many be defiled;“ • (Hebrews 12:15 NLT) 15Look after each other so that none of you fails to receive the grace of God. Watch out that no poisonous root of bitterness grows up to trouble you, corrupting many. • Anger gone bad - hatred, resentment, bitterness
(Ephesians 4:31-32) "Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. 32 And be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving each other, just as God in Christ also has forgiven you.“
90/10 principle – Steven Covey • 10% of life is made up of what happens to you • 90% of life is decided by how you react • The 10% we have no control over – but the 90% is determined by us • Wounded Emotions • The 10% you had no control of and were victimized • Injustice that leads to justification – I have the right to feel this way because of what they did to me
(Psalms 23) "The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever."
(Luke 4:18) "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, … to heal the brokenhearted…” • Well-being of the Soul Defined– when the mind, the will, the emotions are in line with the truth of God’s Word • (Romans 12:2) "And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.”
III. Embracing the Truth • (1 Corinthians 2:14-16) "But a natural man does not accept the things of the Spirit of God; for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually appraised. 15 But he who is spiritual appraises all things, yet he himself is appraised by no man. 16 For WHO HAS KNOWN THE MIND OF THE LORD, THAT HE SHOULD INSTRUCT HIM? But we have the mind of Christ.“
(Psalms 42:5) "Why are you in despair, O my soul? And why have you become disturbed within me? Hope in God, for I shall again praise Him For the help of His presence.“ • (Hebrews 6:18-19) "in order that by two unchangeable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we may have strong encouragement, we who have fled for refuge in laying hold of the hope set before us.
19 This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, a hope both sure and steadfast and one which enters within the veil,"
The process • Laying hold of emotional well-being • Soul is being saved by being renewed to the truth • Grace for self and others
Reflection Time • In what ways have you been wounded emotionally? What has been your response up to this point? • What is the truth about your situation? “Why are you in despair, O my soul?” What is the hope that will anchor your soul?
