  2. BRIEF DEFINITION OF YENİKAPI Yenikapı is located at the south shores of Historical Peninsula of Istanbul. The district “Yalı Mahallesi” is chosen for Yenikapı conservation development plan as one of the best examples showing the typical characteristics of a traditional Turkish urban settlement. “Yalı Mahallesi” is bounded by sea – shore of Marmara Sea on the south and railway that connect the route from İstanbul to Europe on the north.

  3. YENİKAPI IN HISTORY ‘Yalı mahallesi’ is a typical historic urban quarter of old Istanbul with its timber and masonry civil architecture and its cultural inheritance. An Armenian church called “Church of Surp Tartios Partihiminios” is located in the district. The church is still in the use of its own function.

  4. YENİKAPI IN HISTORY Yenikapı was first established as a port settlement in Byzantine times. The west part of the port was called “Eleutheris” and the east was called “Theodosius”. After the Ottoman Period, Yenikapı was restructured as an extension of Langa and Aksaray. The district had successed in preserving its unique architectural characteristics till 1960s, but after the construction of Kennedy Street through the sea shore, the place has changed so much.

  5. GOAL The goal of the “Yenikapı Conservation Development Plan” is to formulate general planning determinations that maintain the appropriate and contemporary development of the environmental fabric of the Yenikapı Urban Site while preserving its historical and architectural and functional values; and to improve detailed development plans beyond these decisions.

METHOD In the course of GIS in Urban Planning, physical and social survey data of Yenikapı Yalı Mahallesi will be evaluated and proposed action types will be expounded for the modern urbanization, transportation, townscape and landscaping imperatives of the area,while taking into account the prospects for conservation and development.
