  1. Lab Computing Environment Introduction– 2005 SS1 GEOG070 Department of Geography University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Jun Liang, UNC-CH Geography

  2. ONYEN With your ONYEN, you can access a lot of on-campus computing resources, including your personal AFS space, course AFS space, shareware for UNC, etc. For GEOG070, you will need to use course AFS space to complete most of assigned labs. Jun Liang, UNC-CH Geography

  3. AFS Space AFS is a distributed file system similar to a Windows or UNIX file server that allows Windows and UNIX computers to use the same file space. Casual Windows and UNIX users will see little difference between working with files on the local hard drive and working with files stored in AFS space. For more information about how to use AFS, please visit http://help.unc.edu/?id=215&within=search-44001767 Jun Liang, UNC-CH Geography

  4. AFS Space (Cont.) Setting a AFS drive letter to a particular space – it is more like mount a directory to a drive letter, which does not represent a physical drive. Example: If you want to access geography’ AFS space via a drive letter, first, you need to know its location in Unix - /afs/isis/depts/geog/, then create a AFS drive using this path. Jun Liang, UNC-CH Geography

  5. AFS Space (Cont.) Note: • You do not have to set a drive letter for a particular space every time when you login – most time, your computer will remember the mapping. • Also, most PCs managed by ITS or OASIS will map some typical AFS space automatically, such as the general AFS space /afs, or /afs/isis/depts/geog, or your personal AFS space. Jun Liang, UNC-CH Geography

  6. AFS Space (Cont.) Please try to map the following spaces with drive letters: \afs\isis\depts\geog == drive I \afs\isis\home\FirstLetterOfYourOnyen\SecondLetterOfYourOnyen/Onyen = drive H \afs\isis.unc.edu\html\courses\2005ss1\geog\070\006 Jun Liang, UNC-CH Geography

  7. AFS Space (Cont.) • Can you access your UNC-CH AFS drive from off-campus computers? Answer is Yes. Just donwload AFS client software from UNC shareware website – shareware.unc.edu and install AFS client software. You can define drive letters to AFS spaces. Jun Liang, UNC-CH Geography

  8. Shareware.unc.edu • Some useful software you can download from UNC-CH: AFS Client – OpenAFS1.2.X Symantec Antivirus - 9.0 Windows WS FTP LE - 6.0 VPN Client (Cisco) Secure CRT - 4.1.7 Winzip Jun Liang, UNC-CH Geography

  9. On-Campus GIS Software/Hardware resources • General software list: http://www.unc.edu/atn/software/ • Current GIS software list: https://www.unc.edu/sr-bin/software.pl?id=3699 • Previous GIS Software list: https://www.unc.edu/sr-bin/software.pl?id=3680 You can install ArcGIS/ArcView/ERDAS in your personal computers, and purchase Dongle or use UNC license server to obtain licenses. Check the GIS software website above. Jun Liang, UNC-CH Geography

  10. On-Campus GIS Software/Hardware resources (Cont.) • Geography Computer lab – 319 Saunders Hall • Odum institute – Manning Hall basement. • Davis Library – Amanda Henley http://www.lib.unc.edu/reference/gis/ PC with GIS software, and plotters, etc (they may charge you for using the plotter.) Jun Liang, UNC-CH Geography

  11. Local GIS Data http://www.lib.unc.edu/reference/gis/datafinder/index.html http://www.geographynetwork.com/ Check AFS space at: \isis\data\gis\... Jun Liang, UNC-CH Geography

  12. ESRI Virtual Campus ESRI Virtual Campus is a source for training, education, research, and discussions in geographic information systems (GIS). UNC has site license to access lot of on line courses, including introduction to ArcGIS/ArcView/Avenue/ArcIMS/Network Analysis, etc. Jun Liang, UNC-CH Geography

  13. ESRI Virtual Campus To be able to access virtual campus’s resources, you need to register on their website, then login and start a course with a course access code, which can be purchase from ESRI, or obtained from other sources. Jun Liang, UNC-CH Geography
