  2. Early Years • Born June 23, 1929 in Jersey City, New Jersey • His father was an Italian immigrant • His mother’s family had deep roots in the South • How might this shape his view(s) of the Civil War?

  3. Early Education • Shaara excelled both academically and athletically • Won more sports awards than any other student in the history of his high school • Ended his semi-professional boxing career 17-1

  4. Life as a Young Man • Heavily emulated life of his favorite author, Ernest Hemingway • Paratrooper in the Korean War • Police officer • Married in 1950 • Graduated from Rutgers with a B.A. in 1951 Ernest Hemingway

  5. Literary Life • Wrote short stories throughout the 1950’s • More than 75 in his life • In 1961, became a teacher of creative writing & literature at Florida State University • Published several well-received novels and stories (“Come To My Party,” The Broken Place, The Herald, Soldier Boy)

  6. The Killer Angels • Shaara’s great-grandfather was a member of the 4th Georgia Infantry • Left behind letters that began his fascination with the Civil War • Wrote The Killer Angels 1966-1970 • Published in 1974

  7. The Killer Angels “The book’s genius is in Shaara’s ability to narrow down a huge subject to a few people and events that could make it personal for the reader. Shaara’s background provided the insight to see both sides of the conflict. The results are crisp characters, vivid images, and an objectivity that avoided making heroes out of one side or the other.” (Bailey 4)

  8. More The Killer Angels • Won the Pulitzer Prize in 1975 • A prestigious award given annually since the late ’40s to authors of outstanding fiction dealing with American life

  9. Gettysburg “There was not much public acclaim because [The Killer Angels] came out during the Vietnam War, a bad time for a war novel. Fame would not come until much later, five years after Shaara’s death, when the film based on the book was released.” (Bailey 4)

  10. End of Life • Motorcycle accident in Italy in 1972, which left him in a coma for several weeks • Divorced his wife in 1980 • Died May 5, 1988, at the age of 59
