  1. Chemical engineering Team#2: Anita, Charles, Wael

  2. What is chemical engineering? • Chemical engineering is a branch of engineering that applies the physical sciences together with mathematics and economics to production, transformation, transportation and proper usage of molecules, chemicals, materials and energy.

  3. Chemical engineering • There are many sub-disciplines of Chemical Engineering, Product and Process Engineering is one of these disciplines that specialize in dealing with the engineering of chemicals, energy and the processes that create and/or convert them.

  4. Chemical engineer • Chemical engineering combines the application of several principles. • Such principles: Chemical reaction engineering Plant design Process design

  5. Opportunities • Chemical engineers in this field are presented with many opportunities; institutes such as the American Institute of Chemical engineers provide apprenticeship programs for emerging engineers. • Opportunities will allow young engineers to enter industries, with more developed leadership skills and allow them to work on large projects. • A bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering is required for all entry level jobs; this degree requires more focus in areas such as mathematics, critical thinking and other aspect of sciences. • As a start chemical engineers work under the supervision of senior engineers who have the skills and the necessary experience.

  7. What Wayne state offers? • It allows the study of design and control problems with chemical products and process systems as well as engineering sustainability problems with a focus on material and energy efficiency, environmental cleanness, process safety, and social responsibility.

  8. Technology drivers • Bio-energy is one of the most important components to decrease greenhouse gas emissions and substitute of fossil fuels thus less pollution and a cleaner world. The need of energy is increasing continuously, due to increases in industrialization and population. The basic sources of this energy are petroleum, natural gas, and coal, hydro and nuclear.

  9. Fatty Acid Alcohol Glycerin What is Biodiesel? • Made from vegetable/algae oil- or animal fat -based fuel consisting of long-chains of alkyl esters • Lower emissions, High flash point (>300F), Safer • Biodegradable, Essentially non-toxic. FA FA FA FA Biodiesel (alkyl ester)
