In this fire, 146 workers, mostly young women, were trapped and could not escape. As a result, they were burned to death (2). After Perkins witnessed this terrible tragedy, she went to Albany, which is the capital of New York. Her witnessing of this tragic fire resulted in several safety improvements in factories. Perkins helped to improve the conditions in factories in many ways. She helped to improve the sanitary conditions of bakeries that were in cellars (3). Also, she passed the 54-hour law which limited the number of hours a person under the age of 18 could work (2). Through the Factory Investigating Commission, she helped pass a ban on factory workers under the age of 14 (3). Many improvements in working conditions were made as a result of Perkins’ efforts.
