Test or ordeal motif • Motif – a recurring literary theme or element • In most heroic tales, the knight must prove himself worthy • Christian belief at the time was that sinners had to suffer in order for penance for their sins • Before the English jury system, medieval justice determined in a trial by ordeal – whomever lived was innocent/right

  4. Code of Chivalry • Knights had to pass various tests to prove themselves worthy • Live to serve King and Country • Live one’s life so that it is worthy of respect and honor • Live for freedom, justice, and all that is good • Never attack an unarmed foe • Never use a weapon on an opponent not equal to the attack • Avoid lying to your fellow man • Avoid cheating • Avoid torture • Protect the innocent • Exhibit self control • Show respect to authority • Respect women
