  1. Keeping to the topic By: Mary S. Roland

  2. A paragraph should have unity. That means all the parts work together to tell about one main idea. One way to get unity is to stay on topic. • Be sure your paragraph doesn’t have unnecessary information.

  3. Pretend that you and four friends are sitting at a table somewhere. You’re working on a project, and everyone is happy to be together. Everyone joins in the conversation. The group is like a good paragraph. Then a stranger sits down at your table. The stranger doesn’t know anything about the project. She doesn't really fit with your group. The stranger is like unnecessary information in a paragraph. It doesn't belong with the other information. • When you write a paragraph, keep to the topic and remove details that do not support the main idea. Fun teacher

  4. Now it’s your turn… Read each paragraph carefully. Mark out the unnecessary information in the paragraph. Then write why the information is not needed. The dingo is a wild dog. It lives in Australia.;; Kangaroos live in Australia, too. Dingoes usually howl instead of barking. They can make good pets if they are caught as puppies. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

  5. Now it’s your turn… Read each paragraph carefully. Mark out the unnecessary information in the paragraph. Then write why the information is not needed. To write a family history, Kacy would have to talk to many family members. She would have to ask many questions. Kacy thought about the kinds of questions she would ask. She went to the store and bought some pickles for her sandwich. She wrote a list of questions she would ask each family member. Then Kacy was ready to talk to members of her family ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
