  2. Light and Shadows • Shadows can add a lot to a photograph. They can emphasize emotions, create surreal images, and be used in a variety of ways. While strong use of shadows in color photographs tends to be mostly used in silhouettes, it can also appear in a variety of other forms in color photos as well • Shadows add meaning to an image. Without shadows the object may appear plain and boring. Lights and shadows establish the correlation of one object to another and their place in the full scene. The position and strength of the lights and shadows also set the general mood of the subject.

  3. Position: Where are you standing in relation to the direction of light? Where is your subject in relation to the direction of light? Remember: the direction of light can change the mood of the photo

  4. Backlighting & silhouettes: backlight will almost always create silhouettes, unless you have another light coming from in front of your subject

  5. You don’t always have to include the whole subject: For more mystery, just include the lower half of a person, rather than showing their whole body.

  6. Using objects that are opaque (somewhat see through) can add cool effects in your photos

  7. Remember to use different angles; in front of, behind, above & below your subject.

  8. Look for simple objects: Photograph where the object and the shadows cross for interesting abstracts

  9. Photo Challenge: Light and Shadow • Today: Get a camera and go outside and photograph light and shadow in the most interesting way. You do not need to come back inside until 20 minutes before class ends, to edit and turn-in cameras. • Every person must turn-in three different examples of playing with light and shadow. • The photo must have both the subject (or part of it) and it’s shadow in the frame of the photo to show the relationship between the two. • Turn-in via contact sheet with your name on it. • Best & most creative examples with get extra credit (if there are any). Everyone else will get participation points.
