The Kaslo Institute is intended to help meet the challenges & opportunities in a region full of creative talent, but one often lacking a cohesive vision – and a plan – on how best to maximize that talent. Creativity + Technology = Sustainability!
What if we decided that creativity, Kaslo-style, up-the-lake-style, was our greatest asset?
…no one remembers who grabbed the land the Sistine Chapel’s built on, but everyone remembers Michelangelo…
… don’t understand that music can boost a place’s profile, create jobs & multiple other economic, social, and spiritual spin-offs? Then hang in there & keep listening...
…and what if we truly understood how valuable our culture actually is?
Everyone loves (well-preserved) lovely old buildings. The Government of Mexico has a program (“Magical Cities”) that extols the virtues of small towns with architecture like ours…
…we’re from all over the planet. Our politics may differ, but we share a love of place & family that’s quite unique in a largely urbanized, socially disconnected world…
…this building is a testament to the vision (and thick skins) of past Kaslovians. If they could do it…
… we may not agree on a lot of things, but we seem to somehow collectively understand that when it comes to Big Issues, we can come together & make things happen…
…there’s plenty of youthful energy here to help make that happen…
…where “old” is comforting for locals, and “new” for visitors…
…and we’re constantly reminded that good hearts are really not that hard to find…
We live in a place where the city-drawn line between nature and culture blurs, and sometimes disappears entirely. Lucky us.
What if we could figure out how to use technology to help make our lives better, in ways that support our creativity?

What if we gave a brilliant drama teacher the tools & support she needs to create year-’round Shakespeare for Grown-Ups programming right here in Kaslo?
Or used high bandwidth-enabled technologies to help local creators share their art with the rest of the world?
We can build on the technology-enhanced successes of talented, creative Kaslovians like Blair Enns of Win Without Pitching…
… or the web-based work of Susan Mulkey& Jen Gunter of the BC Community Forest Association…
Or Patrick Mallet, who helps manage this global standards organization, from Upper Kaslo…

… what if we could find ways, making use of technology, to help wildly creative young people help other wildly creative young (and slightly older) people in our region find an audience? Change can be ignored, but it can’t be avoided. How might we combine creativity with technology, in ways that help shape change? In ways that help enhance the viability & livability of this region, without paving paradise?
Let’s use Kaslo Jazz Fest as an example. It rocks our village… for 60 hours. What about the other 362 days of the year?

So why not reach out to the other nine venues & create a Top Ten Music Venues in the World Club, then figure out ways – using our fancypants impending high bandwidth – to leverage that association to our mutual advantage?
