  1. Have you ever wondered why you never see baby butterflies flying through the air with the mummy butterfly? Have you ever wondered what happens to the little caterpillar after he goes into his cocoon?

  2. Hands on • Our class will have a Butterfly Observation Center, so we will be able to experience the life cycle of the butterfly.  This will allow the children to continue to use their new vocabulary to discuss what changes occur throughout the life of our very own butterflies.  Once the butterflies hatch from their chrysalises, we will set them free in the garden located on school grounds.  Observation Centre • The observation center will contain the following: • Bug catcher (children will be able to see and record what is happening) • leaves, which will be replenished each day, and a secure stick/branch, to provide a place for the chrysalis •   5-10 butterfly eggs • Science journal: each child will have a science journal to keep in the observation center so that he / she will have the opportunity to sketch each phase of the life cycle as it occurs. • This activity is sure to be fun for all students and an experience they will never forget
