  1. Chapter 21Tobacco Lesson One The Effects of Tobacco Use Pgs 540-545

  2. Tobacco Use is a Serious Health Risk • Tobacco use is the number one cause of preventable disease • All tobacco products must carry warning labels • Still teens begin to smoke, chew, and dip

  3. Nicotine • Tobacco contains nicotine, which is an addictive drug • Nicotine is found in tobacco leaves • Nicotine is a stimulant, which increases the action of the central nervous system-increases heart rate and blood pressure

  4. Cigarette Smoke • The smoke from burning tobacco is toxic • Tobacco smoke is a cancer-causing substance called a carcinogen

  5. Cigarette Smoke • Cigarette smoke contains tar, a thick sticky dark fluid produced when tobacco burns • Tar penetrates a smoker’s respiratory system and destroys structures in the airways and damages the lungs and lung tissue

  6. Cigarette Smoke • Carbon monoxide is a compound found in cigarette smoke that is a colorless, odorless, and poisonous gas that gets into the blood and deprives the tissues and cells of oxygen. It increases the risk of high blood pressure and heart disease

  7. Pipes and Cigars • Cigars have more nicotine and produce more tar than cigarettes • Pipe and cigar smokers can develop cancer of the lip, mouth, and throat

  8. Smokeless Tobacco • Smokeless tobacco is a sniffed through the nose, held in the mouth, or chewed • It contains nicotine and 28 carcinogens

  9. Smokeless Tobacco • Smokeless tobacco is just as addictive as smoked tobacco • Because it is held in the mouth it delivers two to three times the nicotine as a cigarette • Causes leukoplakia (white spots in the mouth) that can develop into cancer

  10. Smokeless Tobacco Damage • Smokeless tobacco users sometimes require surgery to remove the cancer and infected tissue • The surgery leaves the person with obvious deformities

  11. Short-Term Effects of Tobacco Use • Changes in brain chemistry: 1. the addictive properties cause the body to crave more; 2. user experiences withdrawal symptoms like headaches & nervousness • Increased respiration and heart rate: breathing during exercise is difficult and nicotine can cause an irregular heart rate

  12. Short-Term Effects of Tobacco Use • Dulled taste buds and reduced appetite: many smokers lose the ability to enjoy food • Bad breath, smelly hair, clothes, and skin: unattractive effects that may cause others to avoid the user

  13. Long-Term Effects of Tobacco Use • Chronic bronchitis which develops because the cilia no longer function and the lungs are built up with tar • Emphysema is a disease that destroys the air sacs in the lungs so the person must use 80% of their energy just to breathe

  14. Long-Term Effects of Tobacco Use • Lung cancer occurs when the cilia are destroyed and mucous cannot be expelled • Coronary heart disease and stroke because nicotine reduces circulation and blood flow and adds to plaque build-up in the artery walls

  15. Other Consequences • Legal: 1. selling tobacco products to minors is illegal; 2. schools prohibit the use of tobacco products so a student may be suspended or expelled • Social: tobacco users may be excluded socially because of the smell and secondhand smoke • Financial: tobacco products are expensive-smokers can spend $2000 a year on cigarettes
