  5. Allies or Allied Powers The nations that fought together during WWI on the side of Great Britain, France and Russia

  6. Total War The type of war in which countries devote all of their resources to the war effort

  7. Armistice An agreement to stop fighting; such as an agreement was signed on November 11, 1918, ending WWI

  8. Fourteen Points Woodrow Wilson’s list of steps designed to achieve a just and lasting peace after WWI

  9. Treaty of Versailles The peace agreement 1919 that placed sole responsibility for the war on Germany

  10. Militarism The policy of glorifying military power and keeping an army prepared for war

  11. Kaiser Wilhelm II The German ruler who made Bismarck resign, began a naval buildup, and added to European instability

  12. Western Front The region in northern France where the fighting during WWI became deadlocked in 1914

  13. Schlieffen Plan The German strategy to quickly attack and defeat France in the west, and then rush east to fight Russia

  14. Trench Warfare A type of fighting common during WWI in which soldiers fought from deep ditches on the battlefield

  15. Eastern Front The area along the German-Russian border where Russians and Serbs battled Germans and Austro-Hungarians

  16. Unrestricted Submarine Warfare A wartime policy of sinking any ship without warning; used by Germany in the waters around Britain in 1917

  17. Rationing A government system under which people can buy only small amounts of items deemed critical to the war effort

  18. Propaganda One-sided information designed to persuade, boost morale, and encourage support

  19. Self-determination The concept that people can decide for themselves under what type of government they can will live

  20. Georges Clemenceau The French leader at the Paris Peace Conference 1919 who rarely agreed with Wilson’s ideas for world peace

  21. League of Nations The international institution proposed by Woodrow Wilson to keep peace among nations
