  3. Why do Honours in Psychology? Bring together your knowledge and skills in an intensive study on specific topics, and potentially make a real contribution to human knowledge To be eligible for registration as a provisional psychologist with the Psychology Board of Australia To meet requirements for entry into postgraduate professional degrees (e.g. Master of Clinical Psychology, Master of Organisational Psychology, etc.) To meet requirements for entry into postgraduate research degrees (e.g. Doctor of Philosophy) To broaden employment opportunities

What is involved in Honours in Psychology? • One calendar year of full-time study • Begin in February, complete in October • Mostly contained within Semester One and Semester Two, but some components may require attendance outside of those periods, especially the Empirical Thesis • (N.B: part-time study is not offered; only possible in extreme circumstances with School and Faculty permission)

  5. What is involved in Honours in Psychology?

  6. Research Methods (15%) Thirteen lectures and five tutorials A mid-semester exam [7.5%] An end-semester exam [7.5%] Two workshops [-2% penalty for each non-attendance] Conceptual issues in measurement and statistics (Dr Fiona Hibberd) Exploratory Factor Analysis, Confirmatory Factor Analysis, and Reliability (Prof Sabina Kleitman) Item Response Theory, General Linear Models, Multifactor Designs, Effect Sizes, Multi-Level Models, and Logistic Regression (Dr Damian Birney)

Special Fields Seminars OR Theoretical Thesis Special Fields Seminars (15% each) Choosing two from ~16 available seminars Complete a major essay (~2500 words) for each seminar, as well as a small presentation and/or series of participation components OR Theoretical Thesis (30%) Only if you completed HPSC3023 are you eligible to do the Theoretical Thesis instead of the Special Fields Seminars 8,000 words; an extended analysis of a theoretical concept in psychology, researched and prepared under the supervision of Dr Fiona Hibberd

Ethics & Professional Issues (5%) Six lectures and two workshops (marked attendance) [1%] A final exam with four SAQs [4%] The current regulatory and legal context for the practice of psychology; ethical principles for the practice of psychology; approaches in psychological assessment; evidence-based treatments

Empirical Thesis (50%) 9,000 to 12,000 words Design, conduct, and analyse the results from an empirical study, and then write a thesis; all under the supervision of an academic Unlike anything you have done before – a large and sustained research project Appreciate the importance of the research process in psychology, an evidence-based discipline

Applying for Honours in Psychology - Eligibility - You must have completed (or be due to complete beforehand) an APAC-accredited sequence of psychology in your undergraduate degree (or equivalent, e.g. the Graduate Diploma in Psychology) within the last 10 years. - If your degree is not listed as accredited on the APAC website, you are not eligible. If your degree program is accredited but your academic transcript does not record you as having completed an accredited sequence of psychology, you are not eligible. - If you are an internal applicant (i.e. your sequence of psychology was completed at the University of Sydney), you must have completed PSYC3010 and either PSYC2X10 or both PSYC2x11 and PSYC3018 as part of your sequence, otherwise you are not eligible.

Applying for Honours in Psychology - Application The Application Process has 2 steps School Application to be completed by 5pm 30th November - Please visit the Psychology Student Portal for more information. 2. University application to be completed by 5pm 30th November • Complete the University’s online honours application form via Sydney Student*. • There is NO NEED to get approval from staff (i.e., you do not need to have a supervisor in place to apply). You can also apply for Honours Scholarships (not available to BPsych students). Please contact the Scholarships Office for more information. *links to Bachelor of Science (Honours)

  16. Applying for Honours in Psychology - Timeline You will be advised whether you have been accepted to honours in early 2019 by the Admissions Office. Please note that in a change from previous years, no offers or endorsements will be communicated to you by the School of Psychology. You will only receive communications about your application from the Admissions Office, unless the School requires further information from you about your School application. Frequently Asked Questions How are students assigned supervisors for the empirical thesis? • No contact expected with potential supervisor Do I have to have done a relevant third year subject to do my empirical thesis in the area? Do I have to do a clinically relevant thesis to get into postgraduate clinical psychology? What do I do if don’t get into Honours? What can I do overseas with a psychology honours degree from Australia?
