  1. Arcadia University Commemorates the 10th Anniversary of September 11, 2001

  2. How It Started… “After the attacks that day, I knew the country would be changing, even at eleven years old. In the ten years between the attacks and when I created the project I watched the country remember that day. I saw the collective wounds of Americans being sewn back together as individuals, sometimes complete strangers, talked about their experiences on that Tuesday morning. It only seemed fitting to commemorate these attacks with what I witnessed in 10 years: a collective conversation of memories from some complete strangers which would sew together the wounds and our community.” Christine Friis, ‘12

  3. Express Yourself Through writing, people have the ability to express thoughts and emotions in ways that verbally are often not expressed easily. Writing has been found to be therapeutic especially during times following transition and trauma. In September 2011, Arcadia students, faculty, and alumni were invited and encouraged to express their feelings and interpretations of the tragedy that occurred in our nation on September 11, 2001.

  4. Opened to Our Community Members of the Arcadia community shared their memories, feelings, and reactions they remembered from the day of the attacks, and the thoughts that emerged as the country moved forward over the next 10 years.

  5. Making the Flag

  6. “…The image of both towers falling will forever be burned into my mind.”

  7. Uniting the Memories New Life Thrift on Easton Road generously donated fabric to make this project happen. Geneva Johnson, an employee from New Life Thrift, graciously offered to lend her sewing skills to complete our project. Beginning at Arcadia and ending at home, Geneva sewed each of the patches together to form the flag.

  9. Finding a Place of Honor After completion of the Remembrance Flag and to recognize the commitment put forth to create the flag, a place was designated for its display in the University Commons.
