  1. LSM 2104 MiniProjectAdmin Detailshttp://everest.bic.nus.edu.sg/lsm2104 A/Prof Tan Tin Wee

  2. Admin Details • 6 Jan to 24 Feb 2004 • Carried out during scheduled practical labs or anywhere anytime during this period. • Online Submission in the form of a webpage • Closing Time: 2359h on 24 Feb 2004 • Total percentage of this project: 15% of LSM2104 course. • TIP: Please limit the amount of time you spend on this mini-project considering the percentage.

  3. Breakdown of Marking Scheme • 40% Writeup, Scientific style and well-reasoned arguments • 30% Quality of Findings • 20% Presentation conforming to standard scientific quality • 10% Overall quality and individual creativity • Tip: Do not spend too much time on nice graphics – this is not a graphics or website design contest! • Tip: It gets to be real fun creating a website if you have never done it before, but please try to control your time

  4. Format of the Webpage/Website • Template to use http://everest.bic.nus.edu.sg/lsm2104/template03.html • TIP: If you do not follow the template, it will be more difficult in the grading process to make the comparisons. • TIP: Pay attention to the scientific style of this report.

  5. Starting your Project • Create your Personal DirectoryYour directory has been created and the Tas will advise you on how to use FTP to transfer the files to your website • Use your group number and matric number: • Example : sci23456 and your data will be found at the web address http://everest.bic.nus.edu.sg/~sci23456/

  6. Starting your Project • Uploading your FilesPlease refer to the FAQ on how to FTP at the IVLE website. • Back up your files alwaysUse a floppy disk or an external harddisk or a solid state media. If you upload your data in the wrong place, the system will automatically delete them.

  7. During the Project • TIP: Always make full notes. All scientists make complete notes of exactly what they do so that anyone else, in following their notes, can repeat it exactly. If you don’t, you will forget what you did, and as a result, your report will show this. Moreover, very often, you may have to repeat what you are doing to reconfirm, or to add additional things you need to do. • TIP: Collect your data as you go along, and store them systematically, and ALWAYS back up a copy of your data on a floppy disk. It is just too painful to experience a harddisk crash.

  8. Collaborate + Cooperate  Copy • You can collaborate • You can cooperate • You should share ideas • You can borrow ideas but you must attribute those parts which are borrowed, and built upon, and which parts are yours and original to you (as far as you honestly know) • You cannot copy wholesale from somebody else, somewhere. You will be found out sooner or later.

  9. Mode of Creating your Webcontent • For experienced webusers who have created webpages before, you might like to use Dreamweaver or hand-code your HTML • For new users open to learning a new software tool, use Microsoft Frontpage or Netscape Composer • Only in the worse case scenario, compose your website using Microsoft Word and save file as HTML, as from the past 5 years of experience, this always gives a lot of trouble. You’ll regret it.

  10. Grabbing screen shots and incorporating online material • If you need to save a selected area on the screen as a picture, and don’t know how, you can use this small piece of software. • Download this useful program.http://everest.bic.nus.edu.sg/lsm2104/Snappy95.exe • Plagiarism is not allowed. • Usage of pictures or material with permission and attribution is allowed.

  11. Final Stages • When you are finished, please report to your respective TAs that you do not wish to make any more changes, and that you wish to submit. • They will remove your material to a secure location for grading. • Always keep a complete back up copy for youreself (in case we have a harddisk crash ourselves and our backup system fails – it happens!)

  12. When in doubt • Search the Internet: eg. www.google.com • Check for latest updates inhttp://everest.bic.nus.edu.sg/lsm2104/ • Read the Admin instructions againhttp://everest.bic.nus.edu.sg/lsm2104/admin04.doc • Check the Frequently Asked Questionshttp://everest.bic.nus.edu.sg/lsm2104/faq.html • Pose a question on IVLE Forum page • Clarify with your TAs by email or personal appointment • Email/SMS/call your lecturer tinwee@bic.nus.edu.sg /9664-0347 and include your email address for a reply.
