  2. Oklahoma Counties • Where did the counties get their name? • Indian Tribes • What is a county seat? – City that is the seat of government for that county. It has all county offices, courthouse, and the county jail.

  3. Oklahoma Counties • What is the largest, smallest, and most populated county? - Osage, Marshall, OK • What are county officials? – Sheriff, 3 county commissioners, county clerk, county assessor, county treasurer, court clerk. • What does county government do? • Sheriff- runs the jail and is responsible for law enforcement in the county, mainly in rural areas.

  4. Oklahoma Counties • County Clerk- handles the counties businesses and paperwork. • County Assessor- handles property tax and deciding how much your property is worth for tax purposes. • County Treasurer- responsible for handling and distributing county money.

  5. Oklahoma Counties • Court Clerk- All county court business goes through this office. They handle court filings, marriage license, divorce, traffic fines, or any penalty paid to the court.

  6. Oklahoma Leadership • Who are our state leaders? • Governor- Brad Henry, D. Shawnee. Served in state senate for 10 years, defeated Steve Largent in an upset win in 2002. Graduated from OU, is a lawyer, a supporter of government reform, and a strong supporter of schools, students and teachers.

  7. Oklahoma Leadership • Lt. Governor- Jari Askins. D, Duncan. Has served Oklahoma in all three branches of government. Also served in the state legislature. She is the second female Lt. Governor in Oklahoma history.

  8. Oklahoma Leadership • U.S. Senators • Jim Inhofe, R. Tulsa, elected in 1994. Ran for governor in the 1970’s. • Tom Coburn- R, Muskogee. A doctor and a former congressman.

  10. Oklahoma Leadership • First District- John Sullivan, R, Tulsa • Second District- Dan Boren, OK’s only Democratic congressman. Son of OU President David Boren. • Third District- Frank Lucas, R, Cheyenne, elected in 1994. Represents most of W. OK.

  11. Oklahoma Leadership • Fourth District- Tom Cole, R. Moore, his district includes Tinker and Ft. Sill. His mother was a longtime and influential Republican politician. • Fifth District- Mary Fallin, R, Tecumseh, was elected to 3 terms as Lt. Governor. Graduate of OSU, has fought for government and economic reform.
