Roots of Manifest Destiny • Economic • New land for farmers; new trade routes and markets( Santa Fe Trail) ; new opportunities to start a business • Political • Expansion of our nation’s borders/ territory; expansion of slavery • Social • Remove Native Americans; refuge for persecuted groups (Mormons)

  4. U.S. –Mexican War • Causes • President Polk’s desire to expand the United States (Manifest Destiny) • Border Dispute concerning the southern boundary of Texas (Rio Grande was claimed by Texas and disputed by Mexico) • Effects & Impact • Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo (1848) ends the war, grants the United States the Mexican territory of New Mexico, Arizona, and California • United States paid Mexico $10 million for the Gadsden Purchase to help repay Mexico for the annexation of Texas in 1845.

  6. Louisiana Territory (1803) Purchase from France (Napoleon) France was in debt from previous wars and gave the U.S. New Orleans and the rest of the Louisiana Territory for 15 million Double the size of the U.S.

  7. Texas (1845) Was its own Independent country before being Annexed Becoming apart of the U.S. led to the U.S.- Mexican War

  8. Mexican Cession (1848) Land was gained from Mexico after the U.S. – Mexican war Contained parts of New Mexico, California, Arizona

  9. Gadsden Purchase Purchased From Mexico for 10 million for this land and the annexation of Texas Was needed to complete the Transcontinental Railroad

  10. Oregon Territory Land that was previously shared with the British Became apart of the U.S. in 1846 after the compromising with Britain to split the Territory.

  11. Alaska Purchase (1867) March 30, 1867: America signs a treaty with Russia, purchasing the Russian American territories for $7.2 million. (Seward’s Folly)

Physical Characteristics • Gold in California – rush of settlers to California; • pushed many American Indians off their lands; • population of California quickly rises to the amount required for statehood • California’s proximity to Pacific Ocean led to an increase of immigration from Asian nations. • Rocky Mountains’ location between eastern and western parts of the United States; resulted in need for Gadsden Purchase to put in railroad for
