The scientific and academic society of Friuli Venezia Giulia • At the heart of the enlarged Europe • Science and technology hub • Large community of Italian and foreign scientists • Every year more than 8.000 researchers and students from all over the world come to the scientific institutions of the region • 8.8 Researchers per 1000 labour force units (Europe: 5.7)

A Network of 50 public and private research centres, academic institutions and other organisations operating in the innovation sector Based on an Agreement funded by the Regional Authorities of Friuli Venezia Giulia, With the participation of the Italian Ministry for Foreign Affairs and the Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research Coordinating Institution: AREA Science Park Strategic objective: To foster the research potentialof the region, by promoting synergies between research and academic institutions, stressing cooperation between public and private research sectors (intersectoral mobility) and improving attractiveness of qualified human capital (international mobility) The “Coordination Network” of Friuli Venezia Giulia Joint commitment of national and regional Public Authorities

International House: a sharedstrategy for the internationalcompetitiveness of the region An international hosting, training and cultural exchange centre for researchers and for students An overall regional strategy aimed at: Enhancing human capital and knowledge exchange (RECRUITING AND RETAINING) Developing international collaboration between foreign institutions and the scientific bodies of the region (DEVELOPING INTERNATIONAL NETWORKS OF EXCELLENCE) Enhancing the scientific and technological potential at local level (PROMOTING REGIONAL INNOVATION NETWORKS) Improving the quality of foreign students and researchers’ stays at the regional scientific institutions (ENHANCING ATTRACTIVENESS AND TERRITORIAL MARKETING)

International House: 4 measures Incoming Mobility Fellowships (Measure 1) Individual experienced researchers from abroad to be hosted in one of the Coordination Network institutions ” for an International House” FP7 People Programme COFUND 2008 Outgoing Mobility Fellowships (Measure 2) Individual experienced researchers of one of the Coordination Network institutions to go abroad with a return phase Inter-institutional research teams Support to joint research projects (Measure 3) Hosting services Pilot project (Measure 4) Foreign Students and Researchers

Focus on measures 1 and 2 “TALENTS for an International House” International Fellowships Programme • The main features • A regional fellowships programme involving more than 40 research organisations located in FVG region • Implementation of multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary and technological research • Involvement of private companies in the mobility measures and priority given to candidates with previous experience in private research sector • Compliance with principles of the European Charter for researchers and the Code of Conduct for their recruitment

Focus on measure 4 Joint Hosting services An example of “creative management of diversity” A local network of integrated services aimed at enhancing the international attractiveness of international students and researchers Initiative developed by AREA Science Park, jointly with other 12 private and public institutions of Trieste, supported by the Regional Authorities and in cooperation with Trieste Municipality Complying with the most recent European strategies on international mobility

The servicesoffered • Updated information and tailored assistanceon entry procedures and bureaucratic requirements and on the following issues: • National taxation and social security system • Local scientific and academic context • Accomodation (for short and long stay) • Other services available in the city of Trieste (transport facilities, healthcare, banks, etc.) • Living and social life (leisure) Services targeted both to Students and Researchers

Current outcomes: some figures • The requests of information satisfied: • Customisedadvice, mostly concerning accomodation and job • opportunities,provided to more than 80 individuals • The website new visits are 8.278 (May - September 2009), from 110 countries around the world • The website pages have been viewed 29.682 times, with a high percentage of page views related primarily to general information and accommodation:

Current outcomes and the next steps • The relevant achievements: • From a table of discussion to a permanent working group • (managing a joint office of at least 15 units) • Effective sharing of expertise • Chance for further enhancing cooperation and concrete • networking between the scientific and academic institutions • Stronger relationships between the scientific system and the • local public Authorities The next challenge: Extension of the model to the entire FVG territory
