9. Cavalier Rewards • Whenever a student is being respectful, working productively, completing assignments, or making good choices he/she earns a ticket that will be collected in a raffle box. At the end of each week, there will be a raffle in class where the students who have tickets in the box can win various small or large prizes. Obviously the more tickets accumulated, the higher the chances of winning!

10. The C-A-V-S System • When students are unable to make good choices however, there will be consequences. • Each student will start out with a 100% behavior grade. If a student chooses not to follow one of our classroom rules, the protocol will be as follows: C- Verbal warning. Student behavior grade lowered by 2% and recorded in the agenda. A - Student behavior grade lowered by 3% and recorded in the agenda. V - Student behavior grade lowered by 5% and they receive a “Make Better Choices” slip. S - Office referral. Behavior grade will be automatically lowered to 60%. Students must stay above a 90% to get an A in Behavior.

11. Homework Policy and Expectations • Homework is due in the morning when school starts. If homework is brought in later in the day is counts as incomplete and the student receives a homework demerit. • Homework demerits are to be signed by BOTH the student and a parent, • Homework needs to be: • Neat • Complete • Have the student’s NAME, the DATE, and UNIVERSITY written on top.

12. Pearson Success Net • All grade level textbooks are online through pearsonsuccessnet.com • Students will get a log-in and password sent home • Keep in a safe place • If students forget their textbook, this is a place they can go to complete their work.

13. Specialist Programs • 6th Grade Specialist Programs include: • Band • World Language • Computers • Science • Music • P.E.

14. Scheduling • Master schedules will be provided and online • Adjustments will be updated online • Monday-Thursday • 8:05am - 3:15pm • Friday • 8:05am - 11:35am

Standards Covered in Sixth Grade • In sixth grade, your child will be tested by the state of California in English Language Arts and Math • There are standards and test released questions online for you to be aware of • http://www.cde.ca.gov • Print these out! • Know what your child is learning WE ARE PARTNERS IN YOUR CHILD’S EDUCATION

Tips on How We Can Collaborate to Support Your Child • Reading Comprehension (23%) • Ask them what they are reading • Use compare and contrast in your daily language at home • Look at popular media and how it is written (analyze it) • Writing Strategies (23%) • Have them describe or tell a story in detail • Keep them organized and help them organize their thoughts • Have them categorize in spatial order or order of importance • Written Conventions (21%) • Give them an article and have them highlight verb tenses and clauses • Journal write and look for punctuation • Check for complete sentences on all assignments

Tips on How We Can Collaborate to Support Your Child • Word Analysis (17%) • Have them look up words they do not know or can’t spell • Read using expository text • Highlighting when they see a foreign word • Literary Response and Analysis (16%) • Have them read out loud using intonation • Ask them about their book plot • What is the theme of their book?

Tips on How We Can Collaborate to Support Your Child • Number Sense (39%) • Review integers and use of a number line (use sports) • Have them calculate the tip when you go out to eat • Have them calculate the price of a sale item at the store or mall • Algebra and Functions (29%) • Memorize the units of measurement • Calculate the rate • Make flashcards for formulas

20. Field Trips and Enrichments • Field Trips and Enrichment Experiences • September 19th there will be a trips meeting in Honour Hall to discuss all of the field trips for each grade level

Supporting OPA • Volunteer Opportunities • Volunteer Sign-In is located in the Front Office. • Honour Society supervises many school events which can be worked for hours. • Main Office can always use assistance. • Light office duties or other support roles • Enrichment Experts (Music Room, Computer and Science Labs) can always use parent aides. • Game Room Volunteers • M.I. Volunteers at Recess

22. Birthdays! We love birthdays here in OPA, and we make sure that each child is celebrated. But we ask you to respect our school wide policy of not bringing in snacks. We are asking that you donate an item/items that the class would benefit from.

23. Donations I am asking for donations of University of Virginia items (i.e. flags, banners, pennants, posters, etc.). In order to help build up our class library, donations of used age-appropriate fictional or non-fictional books are very much welcome!
