  1. Spreadsheet I • Concepts & operations

  2. Concepts • Workbook: Excel file • Worksheet: sheet • Row: 1-???? • Column: A - Z, AA - ?? • Cell • Cell address e.g. A5

  3. Formula • starts with = • operators: +, - , * , /, (), <, >, = , <>, <=, >=, and, or, not • functions: average(), sum(), if(), max(), min(), left(), mid(), right()

  4. Cell address (1) • relative address • update automatically when the formula is copied to another cell • the relative position of the referred cell with respect to the current cell is recorded

  5. Cell address (2) • absolute address • the address will not change even if the formula is copied to another cell • the exact position of the referred cell is recorded

  6. Editing worksheet • create, open, retrieve, save, save as • printing worksheet • one worksheet = one page? • page setup • Insert/delete a row/column • name a range • cut and paste, erase a range • split windows and freeze heading

  7. Formatting • Column width and row height • input date, number, text, time format • border and shading

  8. Data Manipulation • copy formulae • autofill • sorting • multiple keys • ascending and descending

  9. Graphs • charts are more attractive than a table of data • easier to interpret data trend with a chart • bar chart, pie chart, line chart • chart components: title, labels, legend • adding graph • on the same worksheet • on a new worksheet

  10. Column/bar chart • general purpose • usually used in data sets, which consist of qualitative descriptions • e.g. statistics of examination results • e.g. Sales amount in recent years

  11. Pie chart • used to present data describing the composition of a whole • greater sector represents greater proportion

  12. Line chart • best for presenting data set where values between two categories can be interpolated

  13. XY/Scatter chart • for plotting mathematical functions

  14. Spreadsheet applications • calculate final mark from several component papers • quotation • sales trend/financial report • solving equation • what-if analysis/data analysis • simple database manipulation • sorting, grouping, pivot table
