  2. What is E. Coli? • E. Coli is a common type of bacteria that can get into beef and veggies. • E. Coli is short for Escherichia Coli. • E. Coli normally lives inside your intestines, where it helps your body break down and digest the food you eat.

  3. What Happened? After the Barrow County Fair, all over Jamestown parents were calling the school reporting that their children were ill with severe stomach cramps and diarrhea. Some had a fever and a few were vomiting. Susie Thompson’s mother thought she picked up a bug at church camp and gave it to her brother Charlie. Neither of them attended the fair. Mrs. Carl, the principal, realized that seven students were going to be absent with the flu or something else. Many of the students were carried to the emergency room with similar symptoms.

  11. How to treat E. Coli E. Coli usually goes away on its own. The main treatment is to make yourself comfortable and drink sips of water. Some people may need blood transfusions or dialysis.

  12. How to Prevent E. Coli • Cook all types of beef to 160 F • Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water, especially after touching raw meat • Wash any tools or kitchen surfaces that have touched raw meat • Use only pasteurized milk, dairy, and juice items • Use only treated, or chlorinated, drinking water

  13. E. Coli Untreated When E. Coli is untreated, it leads to HUS which can cause kidney failure and cause death.

  14. Symptoms • Diarrhea • Stomach Cramps • Nausea and Vomiting • Fever When E. Coli causes problems with kidneys: • Pale Skin • Fever • Weakness • Bruising

  15. Reorganize Fair for Next Year Put the food on one side of the fair and the animal stalls on the other side. Put games on opposite side from entrance. Put bathrooms in the middle. entrance animals Games food bathroom
