  2. Accomplishments of the Office of Communications and Public Liaison • PSAs • Partnership with the Discovery Channel • Growth of the Web site • Increase in the percentage of public awareness of NIH • Dr. Zerhouni’s leadership in communication NIH Council of Public Representatives

  3. Continued Recommendation • The COPR Idea for an NIH Ambassador Program • Put a “face” on the NIH • Strengthen the public awareness and knowledge of the NIH NIH Council of Public Representatives

  4. The COPR Idea for NIH Ambassadors • To include: • COPR members • COPR alumni • Advisory board members of other institutes • High-profile “recognizable” volunteers NIH Council of Public Representatives

  5. New Recommendations • Publications • In light of COPR’s interest and emphasis on involving the public in research, we recommend three types of publications to be authored by COPR and the Office of the Director NIH Council of Public Representatives

  6. Publications • Scientific publication • Literature review of the value of public participation in research • Editorial • Highlight the value of including the public perspective in research (i.e., mainstream news- paper) • Magazine article • Highlighting success stories about the value of community/public participation in the research process. NIH Council of Public Representatives

  7. Brochure • Development of a brochure condensing the key points from the publications • Wide dissemination to scientists, the public, non-profit organizations, etc. NIH Council of Public Representatives

  8. Public Service Announcement • Creation of a broad NIH PSA • Potential topic: Highlight the value of the investment in biomedical research―past, present, future • Disseminate via TV, radio, and electronic media NIH Council of Public Representatives

  9. Web Development • NIH Kids Web site • Consolidate kid-related NIH sites and materials into a one-stop shop NIH Council of Public Representatives
