  2. Is safety an illusion? We like to feel there are steps we can take to keep ourselves safe. To protect ourselves from theft, we can install an alarm or add high-security locks. To protect our health, we can exercise and eat healthy food. But do our precautions really keep danger away, or do they just give us an illusion of safety? Quickwrite

Furthermore, there is an emphasis on the most eastern chamber being blue and the most western being black velvet and red. Why might this be? Debate in your groups about the significance. • Since time is referenced so often, what is its importance to the story? And what is the meaning behind the hourly striking of the clock? • Thought provoking question: How do you think the Red Death entered the Prince’s abbey that was sealed in “deep seclusion” from the rest of the world? (Argue your theory)

  6. Extension Activity • Write a one to two page description of an everyday location using descriptive details, imagery, and figurative language to make the location seem terrifying. • Get paper edited by a peer to help develop the suspense.
