LESSON 1Jewish Persecution • Holocaust • Literal Meaning, “A completely burnt sacrificial offering to God.” • Jews progressively more limited in actions after WWI • Seen as cause of Germany’s problems • Eventually barred from owning businesses or property • Kristallenacht, “Night of Broken Glass”, Nov. 9, 1938 • Forced into Ghetto’s • All rights suspended, revoked • Jews forced to wear yellow stars for easy identification • 6-pointed star of David • “Juden”

LESSON 5Concentration/Extermination Camps • Originally camps for political dissenters • By 1939 consolidated into 6 large camps • Auschwitz-Birkenau, Belzec, Chelmno, Majdenak, Sobibor, Treblinka • Used as forced labor camps after initial “selection” • Those not selected for labor were killed • Inmates tattooed with I.D. numbers • Site of human experiments

LESSON 8Liberation From Camps • Liberated by Allies, 1943-1945 • Surrounding communities often claimed to not know they were there • Many died anyway due to poor conditions in camps • Stockpiles of belongings found, including shoes, clothing and gold tooth fillings • Most camps destroyed after the war • Some preserved as memorials • Dachau used as a prison for captured Nazi’s

LESSON 10Jewish Homeland/ Israel • 1947, British Mandate of Palestine • U.N. approved plan to divide Palestine • 1948 Arab-Israeli War • Jewish population at over 2 million by 1950 • Remains in dispute • Fighting continues between Israel and Palastine/Muslim nations • Continues to effect the role of U.S.A. and Britain internationally
