  1. The Holy Spirit “PNEUMA” “HAGIOS”

  2. What We Will Discuss! • Mistaken Ideas & Concepts about the Holy Spirit • The Person of the Holy Spirit • The Identity of the Holy Spirit • The Godhead

  3. Introduction • The Bible teaches: • All that can be known with certainty about the Holy Spirit! • The Holy Spirit is spiritual not physical! • The Holy Spirit is a personjust as Christ and the Father! • The personality of the Holy Spirit! • The Holy Spirit hasDivine attributes! • The Holy Spirit is a Divine being of the Godhead!

  4. Mistaken Ideas & Concepts!

  5. Mistaken Ideas! • Some refer to the Holy Spirit as an “it”. • Use Romans 8:16, 26 – “the Spirit itself” - (KJV) • “The Spirit himself” - (ASV, NKJV, NIV, RSV) • “autos” – “Derived from the particle au with the added force of a demonstrative pronoun. In itself it signifies nothing more than again, applied to what has been previously mentioned or, when the whole discourse is looked at, must necessarily be applied. ”(Thayer) • “The ASV translates it, ‘The Spirit himself’ that is preferable…. However, it is very clear that this sentence is in clarification of what is said in the preceding verse. To pneuma, the Spirit, evidently refers to the Holy Spirit.” • Clinton D. Hamilton, Truth Commentaries, Romans, p. 490 • He is not an “it” or a feeling, thing, impersonal force, influence, etc. “(16) The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God .… (26) Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered” (Rom. 8:16, 26 NKJV).

  6. Mistaken Concepts vs. Bible! • The Holy Spirit is NOT God Himself: • Three separate beings at baptism of Jesus: • Matt. 3:16-17 • Jesus spoke of the Father giving and sending the Holy Spirit to his disciples: • Jn. 14:16, 26; 15:26 • The Holy Spirit makes intercession for us to the Father: • Indicates individuality - Rom. 8:26 • Jesus and Paul spoke of the Father and the Holy Spirit as separate beings: • Matt. 28:19; 2 Cor. 13:14 1 2 3

  7. Mistaken Concepts vs. Bible! • The Holy Spirit is NOT Christ Himself: • Three separate beings at baptism of Jesus: • Matt. 3:16-17; cf. Lk. 3:21-22 • Jesus spoke of the Father giving and sending the Holy Spirit to his disciples: • Jn. 14:16, 26; 15:26 • Christ promised “another comforter” – Jn. 14:16 1 2 3

  8. John 14:16 • “And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever” • “another” is from the Greek word “allos” which means another numerically of the same kind. • Cf. Gal. 1:6-7 • A RED & WHITE 2007 Nissian Sentra are another of the same kind. • When compared to a RED or WHITE 2007 Toyota Corolla, the Sentra is a different kind.

  9. Galatians 1:6-7 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another(allos) Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; • “I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another (“heteros”) gospel: 7 Which is not another (“allos”); but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ.” • “heteros” – a different kind. • “allos” – the same kind. • Conclusion: The spirit of Christ is NOT the Holy Spirit, therefore the Holy Spirit is a DIFFERENTspiritof the same kind (cf. Jn. 14:16).

  10. Mistaken Concepts vs. Bible • The Holy Spirit is NOT merely a State of Mind: • Some teach that the Holy Spirit is a “superior mind” or superior understanding of religious truth. • Christian Scientists hold a similar view • Some teach it is a condition of mind! • To have the Holy Spirit is to have the mind of God! • Apostles not promised piety with a good mind in Acts 1:4-8 • Guided into ALL truth - Jn. 16:13 "However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come.

  11. Mistaken Concepts vs. Bible • The Holy Spirit is NOT just an Influence: • Some teach it is just an influence: • A force of moral persuasion or conviction. • Directs or moves one to do righteousness. • Helps one to make the right decisions. • This idea prevails in many denominations: • Jehovah’s Witnesses teach: • “The holy spirit is the invisible action force of Almighty God that moves his servants to do his will”(Let God Be True, Watchtower Bible and Tract Society, New York, 1946, p. 89)

  12. Mistaken Concepts vs. Bible • The end result of the Influence View: • “What is the effect of the unscriptural view that the Holy Spirit is an impersonal force or a mere influence? In life those who think the Spirit of God is an influence face the hopeless question, ‘How can we tell when we are influenced by the influence?’They are forced to think of the ministry and work of the Spirit in terms of feelings, leadings, intuitions, and a vague mysticism surrounds the Holy Spirit. They can only move along a road strewn with endless decisions that must be made by how they feel. When the intensity of their feelings that led to their decision fades, the road they follow leads them into doubts and confusion on one hand or into fanaticism and wild dreaming on the other. The teaching of the Scriptures about the Spirit does not lead to this condition.” • (Elmer L’Roy, The Holy Spirit, 1966, p. 3-4)

  13. An Example of The Influence & Feelings View “Earlier this year, I went out to look for a new car. I went to the first dealership, but I felt uncomfortable in my spirit about the place. He could not find me the kind of car I really wanted, and the stories he told me changed several times.       I ended up going to another dealership and buying a new car from them. They sold me a car that was precisely what I wanted, and at a very advantageous price. I felt good in my spirit about this deal and this dealership.      When the salesman from the first dealership found out that I had bought a car from another dealership, he went into a rage. He tracked me down, confronted me in a parking lot and screamed obscenities at me.  Wow.      I had no idea that salesman and that dealership was evil like that. And if the salesman and the dealership management were this obnoxious to me before a sale, how would they have been concerning follow-up experiences like standing by the warranty on their car? They were probably just as unreasonable on the follow-up matters too.      I didn't know these people were crooks, but the Holy Ghost did. I've had no regrets at all with the dealership I ended up buying from. And their follow-up has been excellent also. They have fulfilled to me every part of the car's warranty.      It pays to listen to the Spirit of God. He will save you money and trouble if you'll listen to him.”  Source: http://brothermel.com/godstruelawsoffinancialprosperity.aspx

  14. Indirectly! How Does the Spirit Operate? The Holy Spirit Directly? Indirectly Through the Word!

  15. The Spirit Revealed Eph. 3:3-5 “Sword of the Spirit” Eph. 6:17 1 Cor. 14:37 Law of the Spirit of Life (Rom. 8:2)

  16. The Spirit Gives Evidence - Rom. 8:16 “I did that” “Repent and be Baptized” The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, Agree Tells What One Must Do Knows What He Has Done Then we can know we are children of God!

  17. The Person of the Holy Spirit

  18. The Person of the Holy Spirit • The Holy Spirit is a Person (Spirit Person) • By Person we mean, has: • Character! • Individuality! • Influence! • Life! • Thought! • Will Power! • Disposition! • Ability!

  19. The Person of the Holy Spirit • The Holy Spirit Has Marks of Personality: • He is singular like God and Christ • Spoken of individually as God and Christ are! • Referred to by Jesus in a singular number and masculine in gender: • “…because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.” (Jn. 14:17) • “He shall teach you all things…” (Jn. 14:26) • “He shall testify of me…” (Jn. 15:26) • “Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come” (Jn. 16:13).

  20. The Person of the Holy Spirit And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God. • The Holy Spirit has Personal Attributes: • He has a mind - Rom. 8:27 • He hears - Jn. 16:13 • He speaks - 1 Tim. 4:1 • He has a will - Acts 16:6-7 • He knows and communicates - 1 Cor. 2:10-11 • He bears witness - Rom. 8:16, 17 • He gives life - Gal. 6:8 • He helps and makes intercession - Rom. 8:26 • He has the power to love - Rom. 15:30 • He glorifies - Jn. 16:14 • He commands - Acts 13:2-4 • He can be vexed - Isa. 63:10 As they ministered to the Lord, and fasted, the Holy Ghost said, Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them. And when they had fasted and prayed, and laid their hands on them, they sent them away. So they, being sent forth by the Holy Ghost, departed unto Seleucia; and from thence they sailed to Cyprus. Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; Now I beg you, brethren, through the Lord Jesus Christ, and through the love of the Spirit, that you strive together with me in prayers to God for me, (NKJV) Now when they had gone through Phrygia and the region of Galatia, they were forbidden by the Holy Spirit to preach the word in Asia. After they had come to Mysia, they tried to go into Bithynia, but the Spirit did not permit them. NKJV) But they rebelled, and vexed (grieved) his holy Spirit: therefore he was turned to be their enemy, and he fought against them. cf. Eph. 4:30 He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you. (NKJV) But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God. For what man knows the things of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God. (NKJV) The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs--heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together. (NKJV) For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life. (NKJV) Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. (NKJV)

  21. The Identity of the Holy Spirit

  22. The Identity of the Holy Spirit But as it is written: Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, Nor have entered into the heart of man The things which God has prepared for those who love Him." But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God. (NKJV) Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your presence? If I ascend into heaven, You are there; If I make my bed in hell, behold, You are there. If I take the wings of the morning, And dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, Even there Your hand shall lead me, And Your right hand shall hold me. (NKJV) • The Holy Spirit is a Divine Person: • Has Characteristics of Deity possessed by the Father and the Son – therefore Divine! • The Holy Spirit Is God (Acts 5:3, 4) • The Holy Spirit is Eternal (Heb. 9:13-14) • The Holy Spirit is Omnipresent (Psa. 139:7-10) • The Holy Spirit is Omniscient (1 Cor. 2:9-10) • The Holy Spirit is Omnipotent (Micah 3:8) But truly I am full of power by the Spirit of the LORD, And of justice and might, To declare to Jacob his transgression And to Israel his sin. (NKJV) cf. Acts 1:5, 8 But Peter said, "Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and keep back part of the price of the land for yourself? "While it remained, was it not your own? And after it was sold, was it not in your own control? Why have you conceived this thing in your heart? You have not lied to men but to God." (NKJV) For if the blood of bulls and goats and the ashes of a heifer, sprinkling the unclean, sanctifies for the purifying of the flesh, how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without spot to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God? (NKJV)

  23. The Identity of the Holy Spirit "These things I have spoken to you while being present with you. "But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you. (NKJV) • The Holy Spirit is a Divine Person: • Manifests ATTRIBUTES of Deity-thus Divine! • He Creates – Gen. 1:2; Job 26:13; 33:4 • He Regenerates & Restores-Jn. 3:5 • He Worked Miracles – 1 Cor. 12:9-11 • He Inspired Prophets - 1 Pet. 1:9-12; 2 Pet. 1:19-21 • He Teaches Men - Jn. 14:25-26; 1 Cor. 2:13 • He Possesses Divine Attributes - power, holiness, grace, goodness, knowledge, will, judgment & truth • Rom. 15:13; Heb. 10:29; Neh. 9:20; 1 Cor. 2:9-11; 12:11; Acts 15:28; Jn. 14:16, 17; 16:13 • These attributes are not the Being of the Holy Spirit, but what the Being possesses!

  24. The Godhead

  25. The Godhead • The Holy Spirit is a Being of the Godhead: • Term “godhead” found 3 times in the KJV • Acts 17:29; Rom. 1:20; Col. 2:9 • “theios” – “theiotes” – “theotes” • Derivatives of the word “theos” • Denotes “deity, divinity, divine majesty, divine nature, that which pertains to God, godhead” • The Bible teaches plurality in the Godhead: • “Elohim” (God) is plural of “El” or “Eloah” • “And God (Elohim) said, Let US make man in OURimage, after OUR likeness…” (Gen. 1:26) • “And the LORD God (Elohim) said, Behold, the man is become as one of US…” (Gen. 3:22) • Father (Jehovah), Jesus Christ (Word-Son) & the Holy Spirit • Matt. 3:16, 17; 28:19; Rom. 15:30; 2 Cor. 13:14 • Each person is equally God, yet each is of a different rank by the Divine order.

  26. Father ISJn 20:17 Is Not John 14:26 Is Not John 8:16 God (Deity) IS - Heb. 1:8 IS- Acts 5:3-4 Holy Spirit Son (Christ) Is Not Acts 10:38 The Godhead(Father-Son-Holy Spirit) "But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you. (NKJV) Jesus said to her, "Do not cling to Me, for I have not yet ascended to My Father; but go to My brethren and say to them, 'I am ascending to My Father and your Father, and to My God and your God.'" But Peter said, "Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and keep back part of the price of the land for yourself? "While it remained, was it not your own? And after it was sold, was it not in your own control? Why have you conceived this thing in your heart? You have not lied to men but to God." (Acts 5:3-4 NKJV) "And yet if I do judge, My judgment is true; for I am not alone, but I am with the Father who sent Me. (NKJV) "how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him. (NKJV) But to the Son He says: "Your throne, O God, is forever and ever; A scepter of righteousness is the scepter of Your Kingdom. (NKJV) cf. Psa. 45:6-7 God (Deity) Holy Spirit Chart above by Danny Brown Jn. 14:16; 15:26; 16:7; Matt. 3:16, 17; 28:19; 1 Jn. 5:7; Eph. 4:4-7; 2 Cor. 13:14

  27. Conclusion! • The Holy Sprit is not just: • God Himself or the Spirit of Christ! • A superior state of mind! • An influence, feeling etc.! • The Holy Spirit Guides us Through the Word! • The Holy Spirit is a Divine Being! • The Holy Spirit has Characteristics and Attributes of Deity! • The Holy Spirit is a separate and distinct Divine being of the Godhead!

  28. “What Shall We Do?” Acts 2:37 • An alien sinner must… • Hear the Gospel - Romans 10:17 • Believe - Romans 10:10 • Repent – Acts 17:30 • Confess Christ - Acts 8:37 • Be Baptized in water - Acts 2:38 • An erring Child of God must… • Repent and Pray - Acts 8:22
