Empowering Street Children in Accra: The Chance for Children Project

The Chance for Children Project in Accra, Ghana, addresses the plight of 30,000 to 50,000 street children facing hardship, exploitation, and poverty. Established as an international NGO in 1999, the project provides these children with love, safety, education, and vocational training. Initiatives include a drop-in center, homes for girls and boys, youth training programs, and workshops focused on skill development and vital life education. Supported by local and international donors, CFC aims to re-integrate children into families and improve their quality of life.

  2. Ghana has a population of about 24 million people. Approximately 4 million live in the capital city of Accra.

  3. Background More than 50% ofthepopulation in Ghana isyoungerthan 16 years. Thisis a characteristicofmany countries whicharesituatedsouthofthe Sahel zone.

  4. Background Althoughjobopportunities in thecitiesare limited, manypeople leavetheirvillagesandmovetothecity in searchof a betterlife.

  5. Background Between 30‘000 and 50‘000 childrenareliving in thestreetsof Accra. Theirreality: Slums, hardwork, exploitation, criminality, hunger andmisery.

  10. Girls Group Home Jamestown 10 formerstreetgirlsareatthemomentlivingheretogetherwith a housemother. The girlsgotoschoolor do an apprenticeship.

  11. Hebron-Home forboys Upto 30 childrenarelivinghereaspartof a community. Theylearntotakeresponsibilityfortheiractionsandgotoschool in theneighboringtownofNsawam.

  12. Youth in professional training Adolescentswhohavecompletedthecompulsoryschoolingaredoing an apprenticeshiporcontinuingtheirstudies. Theyareliving in sharedapartmentsandarebeingsupervised in theirdailylife.

  13. Workshops The childrenandyouthparticipate in diverse handicraftworkshops. Bycreating batik materials, cards, necklaces, carvingsandwovenbasketstheycanexploreandenhancetheirhandicraftskills. Other workshopsaddress sexual educationandotherimportantissues.

  14. Chance forChildrensupports a total of 80 childrenandadolescents. 22 youngpeoplehavebynowcompletedtheireducationandlead a self-determinedlife. 25 Ghanaianwomenandmenas well astwe European arebynowworking in the CFC team. CFC attachsgreatimportancetoofferinggoodworkingconditions, appropriatesocialbenefitsand fair salaries.

  15. Financing Chance forChildrenisbeingsupportedby2000 private persons, different churchs, associations, schoolsandcompanies. Toguaranteelong-termfinancalplanning, thevoluntarygroups„CFC Friends“ organizes diverse activities in Switzerlandand Ghana.
