  1. High Tech Micro channels Team: “Alpha” Members: Edwin Tachiri Susana Cabrera Alejandra Ibarra June 10th, 2011

  2. Outline • Understand how microchannels work • How could microchannels potentially help us in the future? • How microchannels helped us identify pH

  3. Objectives • To successfully use microchannels to test pH of substances • Learn about polymers • Identify the multiple uses microchannels have • Learn how microchannels are made

  4. What are microfluidic channels? Structures made of the polymer polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) Less than 1mm in diameter Used to analyze cells, blood ( basically any fluid) but using a very small sample Could potentially be used to test evidence, DNA, cells.

  5. Statement Of Problem • The problem we had was to create a better way to test pH. • Our limitations wereonly having three toothpicks and one Petri dish. • Our restrictions wereone type of polymer and only having a week. • Our goals were trying to get the accurate pH using the smallest amount of materials.

  6. Analysis The microchannels allowed us to use a minimal sample of our substance in order to determine the pH We imitated the nanotechnology used to create the microchannels We used a curing agent to solidify the polymer PDMS

  7. Results • We used a pH indicator to test our substances • We found that: • bleach is basic (pH=10) • Vinegar is acidic(pH=3) • Dishwater is basic (pH=8) • Listerine is acidic (pH=2.5)

  8. Conclusion • Microchannels are a very useful technology: • They are used worldwide to test pH of substances. • Provide precise testing • Small samples of chemicals • They help us know whether substances are harmful to our life or not. This is bleach turning green!!!

  9. This are some pictures of microfluidic channels
