Influencing Employee Commute Behavior in the Silicon Valley Region Prepared by Joanna Huitt MURP Candidate, 2013 SJSU
Project Overview Major Goals • Explore what a variety of organizations across the Silicon Valley Region are doing to shift employee commute behavior • Determine which methods are most effective • Provide a user friendly, useful guide that demonstrates why this will be beneficial for employers • Create a tool kit for employers that are looking to implement measures to shift employee commute behavior
Policy & Commute Data Review • Review policy at city, state, & federal level to determine what is required and what is offered for employers • Review commute related benefits offered by regional agencies • Review census data to determine trends and commute behavior across the Silicon Valley Region
Employer Case Studies Perform 10 case studies of employers across the region - 2 from each county Employers should exhibit varying characteristics with respect to size of organization, industry, proximity to transit, current engagement in commute shift behavior, type of worksite Case studies will include an interview with the employee responsible for employee commute benefits
Employee Commute Survey A survey will be distributed to employees of the organizations profiled in the case studies The survey will attempt to establish the policies that employees find preferable and most useful The ultimate goal is to compare and contrast what is offered and to get a sense of what it would take to influence employee behavior The survey will then potentially be opened up to commuters across the region with no preference to organization
Feedback? Would this type of research be useful for you? What are your thoughts on the format? What would be useful for all of you as transportation champions within your organization? What questions would you like to see directed to employees? What would you be interested in learning from other organizations? What kinds of things would be useful in a tool kit?
