  1. The…Thesis Statement What is it? It’s a sentence/statement that clearly establishes the Main Idea of an expository essay. It is usually one sentence placed in the introductory paragraph. Gives the paper a direct focus

  2. What it is NOT! • A simple statement of fact. Ex: Sugar is sweet • This is a fact that cannot be proven otherwise, therefore there is no need to argue it. However……. Ex: Sugar is a sweet substance that is actually not as bad for you as many people might think. • This is a statement that, with enough support, can certainly be proven.

  3. Thesis or Not? • There are many different breeds of dogs in the world. • The state of Texas has several professional sports teams. • Golden Retrievers are the best dogs for children because they are friendly, loyal, and obedient. • People should eat a healthy, balanced diet. • Long is one of the best schools in CFB because of it’s advanced use of technology. • Dan F. Long is a Middle School in Carrollton, Tx.

  4. How to come up with a good thesis statement • First decide on an overall topic Ex: Breeds of Dogs, Exercise, Desserts, Sports Teams, the iphone5 • Ask yourself “What about my topic do I want to prove? AND….Do I have enough evidence to support my claim? Ex: Golden Retrievers are the best breed of dog for children because they are loyal and obedient. Ex: The iphone5 is better than the Android because it’s faster and has more apps.

  5. Be Careful Though….. • This is NOT YOUR OPINION!! • DON’T use “I believe or I think” • Essay should be written in 3rd person POV
