  2. It’s all a big nothing: The nihilistic vision of the sopranos • What is nihilism: This means nothing in particular, complete absence of objects or values meaning that nothing matters or nothing makes a difference. EX : In the sopranos the main character, Tony which point of view is influenced on a aesthetic life. • Nietzsche was the first to point out point out the dangerous and creative opportunity where he states that nihilism recognizes the becoming of life an the loss of faith in ideas that are viewed as facts. • Two types of nihilism : active and passive * active : is a process where you become a creative individual and you rise above resentment and life. *passive : rejection of values without spiritless that allows one to become an individual self creator. • Sopranos = passive form.

  3. It’s all a big nothing: The nihilistic vision of the sopranos • Tony Soprano + characteristics of nihilism = attitude of alienation, disorientation, and indifference. • As nihilism results from the collapse of faith it relates to Tony as he always sees walls falling all around.

  4. Gary Cooper is Dead & Gone • Tony is feels depressed because his values are collapsing. He also thinks America today is pampered he expresses this when he say to Dr. Melfi “ Do you know that we are the only country in the world where the pursuit of happiness is guaranteed in writing?”. He tries to base himself with loyalty and honor but he has neither religious faith nor trust in the law to govern his feelings and actions. • Nihilist attitude leads to fragmentation = relativism (beliefs that knowledge results from personal perspective)= subsequent denial (denial of belief or truth)= rejection of the purpose of life . Ex : AJ in D-Girl episode when he starts to question everything and starts denying God. • AJ thinks there is no purpose in life , that all is a series of distractions until you die. Nihilism is external thought

  5. Back to the rathole • Tony is complex character because sometimes his moral appears saturated by a passive nihilism while he struggles actively to over come such a life . • According to Nietzsche : *passive nihilist: refuses to rise above the negative in his own life. * active nihilist: gains clarity of the purpose and overcomes itself. • “ What does not destroy us makes us stronger” Nietzsche. • Tony’s development – finds no hope instead he clings to the past he fears the future. Meaning that self-reflection DOES NOT guarantee self-ìmprovement.
