Status of VITESS and new release, version 2.6 Klaus Lieutenant K. Lieutenant VITESS 2.6

  2. Present Status • Staff • Michael Fromme (HMI; GUI and release versions) part time • Sergey Manoshin (HMI; modules and applications) until end of May 2005 • Géza Zsigmond (PSI; modules and applications), part time • Klaus Lieutenant (ILL; modules and applications) , part time • Version 2.6: • Release: June 2005 • Future maintenance • Geza's modules: Geza Zsigmond • Klaus' modules: Klaus Lieutenant • Sergey's modules: ??? • Further development: ??? Michael Fromme has spoken to Ferenc Mezei, seeking his goals and opinions. For F. Mezei, Vitess is in an operational phase, and questions concerning the modules would be handled by the module responsibles; there is a commitment of Geza + PSI. At HMI, there will be no physicist assigned to scientific developments. M. Fromme assured him that he would continue to care for the Vitess web pages, to distribute the code and to update the GUI in the same quality as before. K. Lieutenant VITESS 2.6

  3. New Features in Vitess 2.6 • New modules • 'polarising mirror' • 'elliptical mirror' • 'grid' • General options • 'instrument digest' • calculation of errors of intensities (in the output) • New features in modules • Chopper : 4 windows allowed • Monitor : peak flux in time monitor • Guide : focus point used as parameter for elliptical shape • Window etc : positioning of components without defining a new co-ordinate system • Improved module 'chopper_fermi' • odd number of channels • 'set zero time' corrected • TOF calculation corrected • shadowing cylinder treated • improved treatment of long wavelengths • Tool 'GenerateMirrorFile' can create a reflectivity file with smooth cutoff K. Lieutenant VITESS 2.6

  4. Module ‘pol_mirror’ • Module simulate a plane mirror with different reflectivity for up- and down neutrons • transmitted or reflected beam can be regarded • mirror can be placed arbitrarily • any output frame can be defined • demanded by people from FZ Juelich K. Lieutenant VITESS 2.6

  5. Module ‘elliptic_mirror’ • Module simulates an elliptic mirror (part of an ellipsoid surface) • mirror can be placed and oriented arbitrarily • different reflectivity for up- and down neutrons • any output frame can be defined • visualisation possible • demanded by people from FZ Juelich • part of PhD S. Manoshin K. Lieutenant VITESS 2.6

  6. Absolute distance Relative distance Sample plane Detector plane 1243,19 mm Center of detector Channels, where neutrons Are moving Space between channels grids Collimation grid Multi pinhole collimation system, (picture taken from thesis S. Manoshin) • Use of a high number collimators as an alternative to focussing in SANS instruments • concept invented by F. Mezei • module written by S. Manoshin within his thesis • used to simulate the new VSANS instrument at HMI K. Lieutenant VITESS 2.6

  7. Instrument Digest K. Lieutenant VITESS 2.6

  8. Recent simulations with VITESS • Instruments recently simulated with VITESS • H8 (Brookhaven) • NEAT (HMI) • VSANS (HMI) • IN14 (ILL) • … K. Lieutenant VITESS 2.6

  9. Looking ahead to Vitess 2.7 • Ideas • Figure of the instrument • Reorganisation of monitors • NeXus data format will be installed • Improved module detector • Numerical optimisation • New tool: 'Chopper Positions‘ • Realization and time scale • Figure of instrument: in work • Rest: ??? K. Lieutenant VITESS 2.6
