MENTORSHIP GAP • In a College of Medicine Survey • Only 50% of respondents said they had a mentor • 20% of these said they met with their mentor only once a year • Most mentorship relations were “found mentorship” not assigned • Many had multiple mentors • Women were more likely to have at least one woman as a mentor

  3. WHY DO YOU NEED A MENTOR? • Studies show that faculty members who have mentors advance more rapidly and are retained in the academic setting more frequently • Personal observation of “faculty implosion” when mentorship not provided or rejected

  4. HOW DO YOU FIND A MENTOR? • Assigned mentorship? • Some argue arranged marriages work • However, mentor/mentee relations are not co-existence • You don’t have years to develop a relationship • Active interviewing and mutual selection are probably the best approach

  7. WHAT DO YOU EXPECT FROM A MENTOR? • Networking • Advocacy • Foster Independence

WHAT IS EXPECTED OF THE “MENTEE?” • Honesty • Respect for the mentor’s time • Contribute ideas, goals, career plans • Not a passive relationship • Make valid effort to follow time lines and benchmarks established with the mentor • Discuss earlier than later when challenges or impediments are encountered

  9. THE PROCESS • Selection • Frequency of meetings • MENTORSHIP AGREEMENT • Document signed by both parties • Establish expectations • Five year plan

  10. SET A MEETING AGENDA • CONSIDER SETTING AGENDA BEFORE MEETING • EMAIL LIST OF TOPICS YOU WANT TO DISCUSS • MENTOR CAN RECIPROCATE • WILL KEEP MEETING ON TARGET AND EFFICIENT
