  2. Aztec Capital city (Tenochtitlan- population 200,000) was located on an island on Lake Texcoco where present day Mexico City Used floating gardens called “chinampas” Raised maize (corn), beans, squash, flowers, avocados, tomatoes, peppers, turkeys, geese, ducks, and dogs

  3. Aztec Civilization centered on warfare, and if you died in war it was a great honor Conquered by the Spanish in the 1500’s by Hernan Cortes The Aztecs

  4. Inca Located in the mountains of Peru, Colombia, Ecuator, N. Chile, and NW Argentina Used terraced gardens that prevented erosion and irrigation canals to grow potatoes, maize (corn), and a grain called quinoa (used for its edible seeds that is closely related to beets, spinach, and tumbleweeds)

  5. Inca Made stone roads throughout the empire Had a messenger system that helped the empire spread news Machu Picchu was a city located about 8,000 feet above sea level Lost City of the Inca

  6. Maya Located in modern day Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador, Belieze, S. and E. Mexico Lived in dense jungles Slash and burn tactic of farming, also farmed on flood plains Farmed corn, sunflower seeds, and cotton Spread out and stopped building massive temples (over 6 million descendants today)

  7. Maya Were very smart people, had a concept of zero, a calendar of 260 days (sacred days) and a 365 days (based on the sun) Had a written language called hieroglyphs Rise and Fall of the Mayan Empire Mayan Encounter
