The Chinese Immigrants Gold discovery in CA in 1848 led to many Chinese immigrants coming in through San Francisco The Chinese empire was weakening and European powers were seizing spheres of influence in China 2 million left China between 1840-1900 and went to other parts of Southeast Asia, Peru, Hawaii, Cuba, and the U.S. 300,000 came to the U.S. between 1840-1900

Chinese Immigrants working on the Central Pacific The Pacific Railway Act of 1862 authorized two companies (the Union Pacific and the Central Pacific) to complete the first transcontinental railroad The Union Pacific was largely laid by Irish immigrants (Irish Paddies) The Central Pacific was largely laid by the Chinese Immigrants

  4. Chinese Immigrants to the U.S. Mostly men “Chinatowns” began to develop in railroad towns, farming villages and urban cities Discrimination against the Chinese resulted in the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 which eliminated Chinese immigration for 60 years

  5. Chinese Exclusion Act 1882 Completely banned Chinese immigration Intended to last for 10 years Not repealed until 1943 Racist series of laws which resulted in increased discrimination and separation of families
