Winter sports • Until 1920 some winter sports were held in the main Olympics. • After World War 1 it was decided that they should separate winter sports off into a winter festival. • This was the birth of the winter Olympics games and was held in the same year as the summer Olympics up until 1992 when it was decided to separate four-year cycles into alternating even-numbered years.

  3. The first winter games • The first winter games were held in 1924 in Chamonix, France. • At the time there were only 16 countries competing. • There were 16 events across 5 sports : skiing (including ski jumping), Bobsleigh, skating, curling, ice hockey.

The first winter games • Britain won gold in the men’s curling. • Britain also won silver in 4-man Bob. • Britain won 2 bronzes in ice hockey and ladies figure skating • This was Britain’s best performance of the winter games • After this point the Winter Games was known as the Winter Olympics

The Winter Olympics • There have been 27 Winter Olympics held every four years since 1924 apart from in 1940 and 1944 – the games were cancelled due to World War II. • The winter Olympics have been held in 11 different countries – the USA, Switzerland and France have been lucky enough to hold it more than once. • The Winter Olympics has never and is unlikely to ever be held by Britain as we don’t get sufficient snow and our temperatures are too mild

The Winter Olympics today • There are now over 80 countries who take part in the Winter Olympics. • The Paralympics was introduced in 1976 to allow disabled sports men and women to take part. • In Sochi this year there will be 5 Paralympic sports: Alpine Skiing, Biathlon, Cross-country skiing, Ice Sledge Hockey and Wheelchair curling..

  8. How Do Britain perform today • Britain never do very well at the Winter Olympics • We tend to do best in the skeleton, snow-boarding and curling. • At the time of writing this presentation Britain had got a gold in the women’s skeleton and a bronze in the women’s snowboarding slope-style. • Since 1924, Britain have only won 10 gold medals at the winter olympics and 22 medals overall!
