Who is KIDS COUNT? • Est’d in 1990 by Governor Caperton • Result of campaign pledge to improve the lives of kids through public and private means. • Vision: Make WV a great place to be a kid. • Mission: Provide most trusted data about child well-being and build alliances to advocate kids’ needs. • Example: Recent ad hoc alliance to advocate against proposed childcare subsidy cuts • Signature Program: KIDS COUNT Data Book

KIDS COUNT Data Book Our signature program Tracks health, education, safety and security, and economic conditions of children on statewide and county-by-county basis Often the basis of public policy decisions An important resource for those who seek and award funding from foundations and the private sector

  4. KIDS COUNT Data Book - 2013 Each year, the Data Book focuses on a special topic of interest for KIDS COUNT This year’s Data Book focused on Teen Pregnancy in WV Why? The data showed an alarming uptick in teen pregnancies since 2005 (after decades of steady decline) We decided to address the issue in a short-form “info-graphic” rather than a lengthy essay

What is an “info-graphic”? • A graphic, visual representation of information, data or knowledge that presents complex information quickly and clearly • Info-graphics enhance understanding by showing patterns and trends in a very visual way • Info-graphics have been around for years (USA Today), but the availability of easy-to-use graphic tools have made them more accessible and popular • They are particularly popular on social media Facebook and Twitter.

  10. What jumps out at us about our data? Reading proficiency.

  11. Success Starts with Reading! • In West Virginia, 3 out of 4 fourth graders are not reading at grade level, making WV 43rd in the nation in grade level proficiency • In Kanawha county, more than half (52%) of all fourth graders are not proficient readers. • The ability to read is central to a child’s success in school, lifelong learning, life long earning potential and the ability to contribute to WV’s economy and security.

  12. This year, KIDS COUNT will publish an info-graphic on the importance of being able to read proficiently at the end of third grade.

What our info-graphic will include… • County-level data on reading scores • A county-by-county map of reading proficiency • Comparisons between state and national data • The problems ahead for kids who can’t read well by the end of third grade • The research-based policy solutions for improving reading proficiency
