  1. UNIX Commands Sandy Morris LS 560 Fall 2014

  2. Slide 1: Displayed is an example of a successful connection to SSH Secure Shell. The ability to connect to the server allows the user access to UNIX command.

  3. Slide 2: Demonstrated is the UNIX command that allows the user to list all folders in the directory. This command is helpful so that the user can see all folders they have to work within.

  4. Slide 3: The ability to change directories is helpful so the user can access a specific folder in their directory and can move freely from directory to directory.

  5. Slide 4: Demonstrated is the UNIX command allowing the user to move back to the root directory. This command is helpful because it allows the user efficiently move back to the root directory no matter how deeply they have moved into the directory and individual files.

  6. Slide 5: The ability to make a new directory allows the user to add new folders and organize their material.

  7. Slide 6: Demonstrated is the UNIX command allowing the user to move into the directory they recently made. The ability to do so will allow them to work within the new directory.

  8. Slide 7: Knowing the command prompt to display the last ten commands that were performed is helpful for the user to stay on track and not duplicate entries.

  9. Slide 8: The Date UNIX command allows the user to display the date and time. This can be helpful if it is necessary for the user to document when certain commands were prompted.

  10. Slide 9: Being able to see the other users currently logged into the system allows for increased security measures and also allows the user to know everyone else who may be working on a project. This would be especially helpful for a management role.

  11. Slide 10: The ability to enter the command for the calendar month is helpful to keep track of commands that were prompted during a certain month. It also allows the user to quickly look at a calendar without leaving their current work.

  12. Slide 11: The ability to delete directories allows the user to keep their system uncluttered.

  13. Slide 12: The ability to display directory permissions, date created, and file size is helpful for trouble shooting and also for tracking history information.

  14. Slide 13: • D = Directory • R = Read • W = Write • X = Execute It is important and helpful to understand what each of the letters represent in UNIX command so the user is able to control security measures and also ensure websites appear correctly.

  15. Slide 14: Using the GREP command is helpful to find patterns and information within files.

  16. Slide 15: Consistently using the exit command when a user is done with their work is always a good practice for security measures.

  17. Slide 16: The example shown uses the “pwd” command which allows the user to see exactly which folder they are currently working in. This is extremely helpful for someone who has been working all day or is generally forgetful and can’t remember what folder they were working in.

  18. Slide 17: The “logname” command allows the user to see what name they are currently logged in under. This command is helpful who may have multiple usernames.
