  2. Debate STRUCTURE Sample Debate Topic: Should GSIS adopt school uniforms? Opponents Affirmative Side: “Yes, GSIS should adopt school uniforms. Here’s why.” Negative Side: “No, GSIS should not adopt school uniforms. Here’s why not.” First Speaker Second Speaker Third Speaker (if group of six) First Speaker Second Speaker Third Speaker (if group of six)

  3. Speakers’ Responsibilities • First Speaker: • Presents the team’s constructive speech (opening argument). They explain why their argument is the best one. This is to be set up like the persuasive speech in the second quarter, complete with cited research.

  4. Speakers’ Responsibilities • Second Speaker: • The second speaker has a chance to question the first speaker in the cross-examination. Second speakers must identify the main idea and key arguments of their opponents’ speech, and then rebut (disprove) them.

  5. Speakers’ Responsibilities • Third Speaker (some groups will have a third speaker. Other groups will divide this responsibility between the first and second speaker). • Must contribute and add to any attacks on the opposition and rebuild the case their teammate made in the opening constructive. This is the summary.

  6. Opponents’ Speech • In your opponent’s speech, find: • Key Issues - Highlight them in saved PDF • Main Idea - Write the main idea of the article in your Google Doc.

  7. Sample Debate Topic • Should GSIS support a “no-fail” policy for its students (especially elementary students)? • “No-fail” is also called “social promotion”.
