History of using marine mammals • 1960’s - The navy began working with whales • 1965 – Bottlenosed dolphin “Tuffy” completed first successful military exercise • 1965-75 – Dolphins used in Vietnam • 1975 – Military began working with Beluga whales and sea lions • 1986-88 – Dolphins in Persian Gulf

What they were used for • Used to study underwater sonar capabilities • Military equipment retrieval • Delivering equipment to divers • Guarding boats and submarines • Attack and kill enemies • Detecting and marking underwater mines • Patrolling areas with sonar • Guiding lost divers to safety
