What is the NSSE? • The National Survey of Student Engagement is a nationally-normed survey of first-year and senior students that collects data on students’ experiences inside and outside of the classroom. • Started in 2000 – piloted in 1999 • Developed and managed from Indiana University at Bloomington • Included 557 colleges and universities in 2006

  3. Specific Content Areas of NSSE • Academic experiences • Faculty teaching styles and emphases • Extra- and co-curricular involvement • Campus climate and supportiveness • Personal and intellectual growth

  4. University Resources • Aggregated, benchmarked results comparing Marymount to similar institutions (Masters I) Allowing for identification of institutional strengths and weakness relative to similar schools • Complete data file with students’ responses linked to their unique MU student ID  Allowing for internal analysis of data to study students’ experiences, perceptions, and behaviors

NSSE at Marymount • Participated in 2004 • 399 Marymount students • 35% response rate • Decided to participate biennially • MU Student Satisfaction Survey administered in off years • Interdivisional approach • Sponsored by the University Retention Committee • Budgeted jointly through Academic Affairs and Enrollment and Student Services

Past Uses of NSSE at Marymount • Differences between retained and non-retained first-year students • Examination of academically strong students’ experiences at Marymount • Basis for Retention Committee Focus Group questions • Liberal Arts Core Committee learning assessment activity • Center for Teaching Excellence comparison of student and faculty perceptions of Marymount’s educational experience

Potential Uses of NSSE at Marymount • Further examination of the correlates to student retention • Indirect measures for LAC and program learning assessment • Evaluation of the effectiveness of co-curricular involvement • Information for Strategic Planning by the University, divisions, schools, and programs • Data for assessment of SACS Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP)
