Replication: each chromosome makes a copy of itself before meiosis or mitosis • Mitosis: the process by which the nucleus of a cell divides to create two new nuclei, each containing an identical copy of DNA. These cells are considered 2N because they have two of each chromosome (23 types of chromosomes in the human cell each paired = 46) • Diploid: 2N, two of each chromosome • Mitosis happens in one cycle. • Cytokinesis: the division of the rest of the cell.

  3. Meiosis: the process by which certain sex cells are created. If you're male, your body uses meiosis to create sperm cells; if you're female, it uses meiosis to create egg cells. Others cells in your body contain 46 chromosomes: 23 from your father and 23 from your mother. Your egg (or sperm) cells contain only half that number—a total of 23 chromosomes. When an egg and sperm unite to make a fertilized egg, the chromosomes add up to equal 46.

  4. Haploid: 1N, one of each chromosome • Meiosis happens in two cycles. The first cycle separates the paired chromosomes (goes from 2N to 1N). The second cycle splits the replicated copy of the chromosomes from the original. • Zygote: the new 2N cell formed when the egg and sperm unite. • Sex cells are called gametes.
