What is a Brownfield? “…..real property, the expansion, redevelopment, or reuse of which may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant or contamination.” (US EPA) • Land that contains low to moderate levels of contamination • Contamination can include: • Old gas stations (lead based gas) • Old factories that used toxic metals like LEAD or MERCURY • Cleaning solvents • Can be redeveloped with environmental cleanup

  17. Eutrophication Recall 1. Describe how eutrophication occurs? Phosphate and nitrogen runoff cause algal blooms. This algae dies and microrganisms decompose it absorbing oxygen and creating sediment.

  19. Bioaccumulation vs Biomagnification Bioaccumulation refers to the accumulation of substances, such as pesticides, mercury and other toxins in an organismover time. Biomagnification refers to the accumulation of toxins through the trophic levels of a food chain. It results in an increased concentration of the toxin in the higher organisms of the food chain.
