  2. Medicines Medicines are drugs that are used to treat or prevent diseases and other conditions.

  3. FDA FDA is an abbreviation for the food and drug administration in USA. Medicine should be approved by FDA before used.

  4. Prescription Medicines Prescription medicines are medicines that can be sold ONLY with a written order from the physician.

  5. The label of the medicine should include instructions how to use it.

  6. Nonprescription medicines The medicines that are sold over the counter (OTC) They don’t require a prescription from the doctor They must be used correctly otherwise it will be harmful.

  7. Types of medicineMedicines to prevent diseases A vaccine is a medicine that prevents a disease from developing A vaccine is made from weakened or dead germs that cause the immune system to produce antibodies Antibodies are proteins that attack germs

  8. Types of vaccine MMR vaccine: Measles, Mumps, and Rubella ( German Measles) Varicella vaccine: chicken pox HPV vaccine: Human Papillomavirus Pertussis vaccine: whooping cough

  9. Types of antibioticsmedicine that fight infection Penicillin : Strep throat , pneumonia Cephalosporin: meningitis, skin rash Tetracycline: urinary tract infection Macrolides: Given to patients allergic to penicillin

  10. Pain RelieversMedicine that relieve pain Aspirin, acetaminophen, ibuprofen, codeine

  11. How medicine enter the body Swallowing or injection are the common way ,medicine enter the body Pills, tablets, capsules , and liquids are takes this way Medicine moves from stomach to intestines then to bloodstream

  12. Injection or shot is another way medicine is given Medicine can also be inhaled as mist or fine powder People with asthma often use the inhaler

  13. Medicine can be applied to skin like creams and ointments Skin patches releases medicine when applied to skin such as the ones that have nicotine for people to quit smoking

  14. Medicine in your body Side effect of medicines is any effect other than the one intended. The age, gender, and size of body contribute to the way the medicine affect the body Typical side effects include headache, upset stomach, and drowsiness

  15. Risks of medicine When a person uses a certain medicine for a long time he might develop a tolerance This is a process where your body needs more and more medicine to get the same effect

  16. In some cases the Dr. might change the medicine because it loses its effectiveness Overuse is another problem, the more antibiotic is used the less effective it becomes

  17. Bacteria built a resistance to antibiotic with frequent exposure Taking two or medicine at once can be dangerous
